Topic: Neo’s compared to EV speakers? |

If this has been discussed please tell me.
Has anyone compared/documented the responses of a 12†EVM12L, and the various Neo’s that are available for pedal steel? Next, same question regarding a comparable 15†EV and the various Neo’s?
If the various speaker companies publish speaker data and there is a way to review it please direct me to it.

The EVM's and (earlier) SRO's are probably my favorite speakers. I can't imagine any Neo (or any other speaker, for that matter), coming close. And I've heard a ton of 'em!
But if there was a Neo that sounded like an EVM, I'd be buying...big time. |

| Donny is right, nothing will sound exactly the same as an EVM 12 L, the closest I have found is a Celestion BN12 300S Neo. They don't nail it, but do have some of the same characteristics and can take anything you can throw at them (within reason), if you get a chance, it may be worth a try. I happen to like them, others may not. Best wishes. |

| I used to have a TT, good speaker, try as many as you can and pick the one that sounds good to you, for the sound your looking for. That was nice of Dale to make that offer. |

| i have a weber neo mag that sounds a bit like the old ev sro. they still make a 15" neomag, but not a 12" |

This is a data sheet from EV, Marty. I don't know how helpful it is. You need to know how to interpret the data and along with other Thiele/Small specs and compare it with other manufacturer's data which should also be available from their website. I know I've seen it on the Eminence site. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/43645/Electro-Voice-Evm-12l.html
It's all numbers and measurements and I'm not savvy enough to decipher it into usable sound info. Good Luck. |

Nobody has commented on the Eminence Hemp Dog, but this is Pete Anderson's signature speaker. Pete used EVM 12Ls for a long time before the Hemp Dog. I like the hemp cone and the Hemp Dog has an efficiency rating of 102+...very efficient. It also has an aluminum edge wound voice coil...like the PF-350.
It is heavy though...around 18 pounds. The Hemp Dog was influenced by The Emi EM-12 which was patterned after the EVM 12L.
I want to try a Hemp Dog sometime in the future.

Don't know if you have ever tried the EVM 12S, but it was intended for lead guitar applications. The basket is a little shorter, but the high frequency is 7Khz vs the 12L at 5Khz. I have a couple in a Thiele design cab, and they work great for steel guitar also, (but then yes they are heavy!)
I have a couple of EV monitors I bought back in the day with a 12S and a horn, and they are the best I've ever used, (including some JBL monitors I later sold>) |

| Recently installed a TT-15 in my NV 400 for weight saving reasons. Seems cleaner,brighter more defined than the BW. Saved about 8 pounds. Had to change my amp settings a little more to the bass side but am completely satisfied. Running around 3 on bass,about 2-3 on mids. |

I did a speaker shootout with about 25 speakers, mostly 12” but a few 15”.
EVM 12l was among them. JBL D120 F. All kinds of Celestions. Travis Toy 12 and 15. PF-350. Old Jensens. Telonics. Black Widow 15.
I played pedal steel into a looper, clean, in every register, dirty. The kitchen sink. Ran the loop through the same amp, just changed the speakers. Same mic, measured the distance off the cone and from cloth. Recorded it into the computer. Also went direct, used the Kemper, the Fryette PS2.
Its all in Logic now.
The newer pedal steel speakers, as a group, are dark. They sound nothing like a D120, which has some magical high end. The Jensens are very natural. The Celestions surprisingly good for steel.
The old EVM 12L was the overall winner. The Black Widow was also a great all around speaker. The PF350 was closer than the Neo’s, but very punchy, and more bottomy. The JBL won for clean, but fell back for distortion tones. The TT 12 was dark. The TT 15 had a bit more highs and I liked it better of the two. Good speaker. The Telonics was darkest of all.
The direct devices all sounded good. These devices are blurring the lines between having a real speaker/mic and emulations. Especially in a track. Still not 100% as good, but getting closer.
My opinions are simply that, my opinions. But I did go to a lot of effort and could listen back to that sequence if I wanted to. I haven’t in quite some time,
