If you own/have owned a Carter Starter, what do you think of it?

Hate it. I dropped it like a rock as soon as could afford a better one.

It's not so bad, I kept it as a backup PSG

Carter Starter PSG photos needed!

Post by Kyler Burke »

Hey y'all,

I've got this Carter Starter I bought a couple months ago and have it just about all setup but it was missing some pull rods, so I built some replacements. However, I'm not sure exactly what the shortest linkages at the changer look like when the were originally setup. Specifically, the RKR lever bellcrank is really close to the changer and the angles are tricky. I'm pondering using r/c car style threaded rod ends with clevises on them for the RKR rods.

Can anybody post a couple close up photos of the bellcranks and pull-rods for the right knee levers? Or maybe somebody has a link to some schematics?

thanks in advance!

It’s okay enough for a beginner but the ones I’ve bought too resell I made good solid knee leaver stops.
Very easy too make good stops for knees but can you imagine a beginner trying too learn on one of these with a knee leaver’s missing the stop.

It was good for a start, but even as a beginner I could easily see and feel its shortcomings. My main gripe was the pedals themselves were harsh on stocking feet, which is how I normally play. The tuners were very flimsy, but did technically stay in-tune. I was able to sell easily for what I paid, and think it was a good starting instrument.

I voted #2 but still gig with mine when i need a light grab and go guitar.

I dont think the pictures in this link show what you are looking for. I will snap a better one when i get to where my starter is stored.

I'm confused.
Is this topic a:
a) Poll about the guitar, or
b) A request for repair/adjustment information?

As for if the guitar is good enough, go to YT and search for the video of Terry Crisp playing one at a convention.
That should answer any and all questions on that subject.

Could be both kinds of requests.
Here's the RKR rod. Very short with retaining spring.
Only lowers string 2 a half-step.
I this what you're looking for?

Bob! Absolutely. Thank you so much. This is kinda what I expected, that it would need a bend in it to work. Very helpful.

To bring clarity to your confusion, the answer is yes.

Really I just thought it was cool as a side note to run the poll and it would help me decide how long I'm willing to bang my head against a wall with setting this thing up. I'm having lots of trouble because somebody had it setup strangely or just threw it back together randomly. Slowly but surely...
