So you stick this down where the string ball slides onto the pin to hold ball in place while you work on the tuner end. You may have to cut it shorter. See Amazon, it is a piano string mute, used by piano tuner folks.

Looks nice. I use removable pencil erasers with the same shape. Box of 25 or so for a dollar or so.
Might have to give these a try!

That looks pretty high tech and classy Larry! The young guys won't even know what this is but if you have half of an old wooden clothespin it works pretty good as well

It sure can be frustrating, can't it Dave? You just seem to run out of hands at times trying to keep an angle and tension on the ball end while trying to wind at the other. The clothespin idea came to me one nite when I was about ready to give up. |

No photo, I took a small piece of scrap wood , made it into a small wedge like half a clothespin. Used the grinding wheel .

I've been using a Piano tuner mute for at least 30 years. Bought one from a couple guys that had a booth and selling gadgets at the ISGC in St Louis.
This same thing was posted on the forum about a year ago, so nothing new. |

well, it is new to those who didn't read anything about it a year back ! I didn't !
I came up with my "accessory" after I acquired the P Pull .
Its never too late to re- remind people of stuff ! Some of us can't even remember yesterday, let alone a year ago ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Works perfect on the PP. I shortened the handle so it will fit in my bar/pick pouch. The LLII is a little different because of the split screws, but it works great there too in combination with the clothespin rotated the other way around. I used to use the clothespin with a piece of corrugated cardboard, this combination should last a little longer! The rubber seems to stay put really well, much better than the hard clothespin by itself. Thanks for the tip Larry.

Why not just cut and wind the string before putting it on the peg. That’s what I do. Never need to hold the string on except to tighten - which is easy because the string is mostly wound on the tuner already. A little counter intuitive but it works like a charm and cuts all the frustration out! _________________ Mostly Pre-1970 guitars. |
