Two-Chord Songs... Suggestions?

Post by Jack Hanson »

Every few years or so, a few of us old geezers (who are spread out between Indiana and California) try to get together under the pretext of playing a few tunes for old-times sake. We usually manage to slip in some music between other vital activities.

Next time we are initiating a theme of two-chord songs. I came up with a few, and would be interested in other suggestions. What'dya got? Here's mine:

1) A-11
2) The Bottle Let Me Down
3) C'est la Vie (You Never Can Tell)
4) Take Me Back To Tulsa
5) ???

Achy Breaky Heart (I think)

For some non-country:
Horse with No Name
Iko Iko
If something I wrote can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, I meant the other one.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Achy Breaky and Hokey Pokey would likely be a hard sell to at least one of my partners, but the rest of the songs are distinct possibilities.

It's surprising that I could not immediately recall tunes such as Jambalaya, Tulsa Time, and Iko Iko, which I have played innumerous times over the years.

I did come up with one more, however: Bottle Baby Boogie.

Best of all, unlike the other two-chord songs listed here that consist of a I and a V chord, the two chords in "Bottle Baby Boogie" are a I and a II chord!!

I read somewhere that Buddy Emmons' original plan for what became his Buddy Emmons Sings Bob Wills album was to play all Bob Wills instrumentals with only one vocal--"Bottle Baby Boogie"!
