RIP Gere Mullican

Post by Dave Sichak »

Hello,
It has been a while since I posted on this forum. But I've doing some research on the old WRVA Old Dominion Barn Dance history and other shows in that era. One group was Bob Williams and his Cumberland Mountaineers. Back in 2013, Gere Mullican was kind enough to contact me and send me a couple of photos and tell me a bit of what he knew of the band members back then. I tried to send him an email today but it bounced (the email was from 6 years ago). It looked like he posted on this forum a bit.

Judging by what he told me about where he lived, I think he passed away on July 10, 2017.

Here is a link to the obituary:

Its a shame the obit does not mention his musicianship at all.

Gere was in the first real band I played in when I was 19. He was the nicest guy, so self deprecating, always saying he didn't really know what he was doing. I learned so much from him. He truly was awesome.

When he retired, he asked me to come by his house. I did, and he asked me if I wanted any of "This stuff. I ain't gonna use it anymore." Every time I record, I sit on his seat, use his tuner, use his bar... he plays on...

Music hath the charm to soothe a savage beast, but I'd try a 10mm first.

I talked to Gere a few times on the internet and he'd told me he had taught Teddy Carr-former steel player for the band Ricochet, how to play steel.
