I'm about to build my first lap steel guitar. Before I begin I want to know what different components are used for, beginning with the nut. What makes a good lap steel nut? Something really hard? Why bone? Or plastic?

Thanks a heap, if you can direct me to a moresuitable formu, please do.

I built one with bone, aluminum, and brass. I prefer aluminum. You won't find a better forum than the one you are on. I belonged (past tense) to another one, and the answers to questions are few and far between. Good luck with you first build. Make sure you get the dimensions on the scale correct and distance between the nut and bridge dead on for the scale length you choose.

I found this several years ago and it is very helpful for a guy starting out.
