Looks like someone just pulled the top plate off them. Bad move. They can be re-wound easily; they can even be tapped while doing it to give you a bright tone/dark tone option via a mini switch. RP
Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, and a Coral Sitar, USA Nashville 112.

If anyone can rebuild it right ,Henry can and it will be a tone monster when it’s done!

I believe the changer mounting has been drilled for splits. Note the row of holes bottom of last photo.Damir Besic wrote:
The end of the neck could be milled out so that split screws can be added and used.
That changer looks just like the ones I had. I was surprised to see that had been done when I pulled off the necks.

Jerry, this one does have the neck milled out for splits. Looks to be original too. Probably an option Bruce offered in 1979.

Wow a lot of work, but looks like its being done well. I could be wrong or maybe its a typo, but are you sure its a 79 model? I thought the front apron plate and slotted changer fingers came later. Please keep us posted as this fun project moves along.

Found a Zum serial number chart on forum and last two numbers, 74, are sequential numbers which looks like a 79.
Parts are all clean and I’m waiting on flocking now. Yes, a lot of work and I just work on it when I can.

Looks great Henry, and I'm sure it will honk. FWIW that serial number indicates it was built as a 10 pedal 9 knee guitar, built in 2006. I'm not sure when the conversion was made from center pull to side pull models.

Mine was late 81. It had the same changers and had the wrap around necks. I had intended to work the changer for splits, but when I pulled off the neck I found that it was already drilled and tap. I didn't know, couldn't see that because of the wrap around necks.
All I had to do was mill out the ends of the necks and install the screws.
Wonder how many more are out there that owners don't know are already worked like that?
Sorry for the sidetrack Damir and Henry. It's looking great and I'm sure someone will be thrilled to own it.
These old Zums are terrific.

Waiting on flocking. Got it ready for new black flocking. The pink in the holes is rolled up card stock to keep flocking glue out. Just makes it easier for me anyway.
