You know never who might show up

Post by Tommy Dodd »

When I first took a job playing weekly at the Atlanta airport, I thought I would get bored with it quickly. But it has been nothing but interesting and kinda cool. The crowds move by fairly quickly, but some folks stop and talk about steel guitar. As a matter fact, in the last several weeks I’ve had Doyle Dykes, Phil Driscoll, and Don Everly’s son stop by and visit. And then today, this guy showed up fresh from weeklong sessions with George Strait in Key West, Florida. I asked him if he wanted to sit in and he declined. I guess he couldn’t handle the pressure.

There’s a Kodak Moment Of The Year award waiting for you somewhere, Tommy.
(iPhone moment just doesn’t have good ring to it...)
And thanks for the tip-off about the George Strait album... 8)

So cool! People say exposure isn't worth anything, but that's just great. (I love the response to the cheap booking agent trying to get your band to play for free: "but people die from exposure").
Franklin D10 8&5, Excel D10 8&5, homemade buffer/overdrive, Moyo pedal, GT-001 effects, 2x BAM200 for stereo. 2x GW8003 8" driver in homemade closed-box. Also NV400 etc. etc...

Tommy, great picture and how nice that you got to see Paul.
Tell us about your airport gig. I have never seen a steel player in an airport...

Tommy, now that's beyond too cool. And playing at the airport has to be a hoot. What a great way to expose our beloved steel guitar to the masses.

A weekly gig at the airport. Well now I've heard it all. I can't begin to imagine how this came about. Guys, load up your gear and head to the airport. Offer to play one gig for free to see how it is received.

I wasn’t gonna say it....but yep that does seem like a weird one. Airports are practically cities unto themselves now though, and Atlanta is a major hub. With weather delays, you can count on a captive audience and the increasing likelihood of a significant passerby 8)

Are you allowed to put out a tip jar? I have mixed feelings about that. It could open the floodgates for everybody and their brother to want in, takes some class away from the airport, and makes the player look like a panhandler. I don't have a problem with selling
your CD's. What are the hours? Do they have other entertainers simultaneously or at other times?

This could be a great way to make contacts and to get gigs.
