Phone call

Post by Harold Dye »

I was out of the house when a call came in and was left on my answering machine. It was a women that was difficult to understand telling my that my windows license had expired and all services would be shut down. She left a number for me to call but I did not, instead I contacted Windows by chat and the person told me this was a scam and they did not contact customers like that. Just wanted to pass this along in case anyone else gets calls like this. I get scam emails all the time.

I get a lot of calls like that. If I'm not busy I let them talk for a while and then tell them I don't have a computer. Or that my English is poor could they repeat that in Danish.

This type of call is known as a tech support scam. It either occurs via unsolicited phone calls, text messages, or via browser popups or popovers. All try to panic the recipient into acting quickly, before they can think it through or ask a friend.

Most of these scams are run out of boiler room telemarketing operations in India.

One of the funniest comebacks I've heard is the recipient of the call pretends to be hard of hearing and keeps complaining to the the scammer that the lawnmower he ordered weeks ago hasn't come in.

If I am busy I ask them where they are calling from and they say London. When I ask for the postcode they hang up.

I love when they call me and I tell them I am a Linux only man... they usually cuss me and hang up. Amazing how Indians can cuss in perfect English...

I did the same this week. I received a call from “Microsoft” saying my windows pc was infected with viruses. I let the guy talk for a while, he was spouting off stuff about my up address and all that mess. Then I told him I only own Apple computers running OSX (which is true) and he got angry and hung up on me! Ha Ha!!
