Ok, you all aren’t going to believe this but I played steel at a gig, and we play pretty loud, with a Fishman Loudbox Mini amp that weighs 19 lbs and is only 60 Watts. The sound was incredible. It has an XLR out and we do run thru system and the out front sound was excellent. Had couple people tell me best my steel has sounded. Chrystal clear with great note separation. The reverb on these things is lush to say the least. I have nothing to do with company and this is not an advertisement. It has a 6.5 inch speaker with a horn. Sounds really great with fiddle too.
Just thought I’d post this if any you have one around, you might try it on steel. They make two bigger versions, the Artist and the pro. Tried the pro yesterday and it’s even better. It’s 160 Watts at only 25lbs. No more 50 lb amps for me.
This happened by accident. When loading my stuff, I somehow didn’t put my LTD amp in my vehicle. Instead of going all way back home, I just tried the little amp and was blown away with the sound. _________________ Henry Matthews

I use one of these (the "big" one - Loudbox Performer) for fiddle with my band. We play loud, and it's perfect for most gigs. I send the signal to the PA as well. Outdoors tho, it struggles with the louder stage volume.
When I first got a steel I used the Fishman to practice with, and it does sound good. I only play steel on a few songs a night and have been carrying a second amp for steel. I've been trying to get my steel amp to sound good with fiddle, and never thought of using the Fish for steel. Maybe I'll try it next gig. _________________ Tom Dillon

I love these discoveries, such as the Cube amps, the Katana amps, etc.
I'll bet your back likes that amp more than the LTD.

Henry, I love my mini-loudbox. It sets next to my steel in my living room, and it sounds just great when I practice. I don't use it at gigs. . .but maybe I should reconsider! It is an amazing little package. _________________ A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first. |

Another vote for this little amp. I use it for fiddle but will try it out with my MSA Studio Pro.
Thanks Henry...Carl |

The loud box Artist and the Performer have an actuator for the horn which makes it adjustable on the really high end. May be even better for steel.
And yes Lee, much better on my back, lol
Always wandered why amps have to weigh a ton in this day of modern technology. Next we need a 20 lb D-10 Emmons push pull, lol. _________________ Henry Matthews

I have a Loud Box I use for Acoustic, not sure what model it is but it does have a teeter or horn. I'll give it a try on steel. Always experimenting 🎶 |

Are the speakers used in acoustic instrument amps any different than those used in regular guitar amps?
I've never played anything other than an acoustic guitar through my acoustic amp, for fear of damaging the speakers.
Perhaps my fears are unfounded.
My amp is a Crate CA-60. The tweeter can be switched on/off.
From the manual:
2 X 6.25 inch woofers with polypropylene cones, rubber surrounds, 17.7 oz magnets, 1" voice coils. |

I have a Loudbox that I had to use for steel one time. Really awful. I have the tri-amped model. Really powerful, but couldn't dial in a good sound. Maybe if I spent more time with it I could dial it in. But there would be no benefit. Due to having 3 power amps inside, it weighs somewhere in the range of my Vashville 400. One heavy Mama. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Gave the Loudbox Mini a try but it really didn’t cut it for my ears. I guess my 30 yr old NV 400 will have to do. I did have Rick Johnson build me split cabs for it about 10 yrs ago and really was a game changer on the weight factor. (I hear you Henry on the weight difference—Double Hernia Surgery—Been There...) Again, the Loudbox Mini is fine for my fiddle. |

I have a couple Loudboxes that I have used in the past for banjo and dobro. They are great for that. But when I've plugged a pedal steel into either I could never find a tone that I considered even remotely passable. To each his own. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |

For sure hard to beat a good N400, I’ve got one that a put a Sica speaker in that sounds great. Still a little heavy for me since my surgery. Maybe I need to split it but then again, another piece to carry, lol.
Richard, you must have one of the older ones. Only heard of them, never seen one. You sound me when I tried to use a Randall Steelman amp. It was worse than awful but some people like them.
Just for anyone’s information, I set bass to 12 o’clock, mids to 9 and treble to about 11. Adjust reverb to your taste. And yes, awesome amp with fiddle and acoustic guitar. _________________ Henry Matthews
