What is the (common) octave designation for 8 string C6 tuning,,(G3 etc)? What would a balanced string tension RANGE be?

This page should help: https://www.hawaiiansteel.com/tunings/master.php

The low C in C6 tunings would be C3.

John Ely also has a list of suggested string gauges for individual pitches on that site, taking neck scale into account.

(So, what was your “dumb” question?)

I thought I looked over John's page pretty good but didn't see that info. The little acoustic practice board I've built https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=331791, I want to use acoustic strings, with as little tension on them as possible,,,and need this info to calculate the strings on the D'Addario web site.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, Sonny, but at the top of that John Ely page, click on Downloads. Then at the bottom of the page that comes up, click on String Gauge Chart. He has some potentially useful info in the text above the chart.
Good luck! -David

There are no "dumb" questions, only dumb answers.

As an old (emphasis is on the OLD) teacher, I always told my students the only dumb question it where you know the answer!
