OMG Ricky Davis help me somebody

Post by Mike Beley »

https://www.facebook.com/ricky.davis.37 ... 530009101/

Can someone please help me (novice player here, working hard at it) what the heck is going on at 1:35ish ??

I want to play this lick in every song for the rest of my life.

Love the aggressive attack/blocking style, wow.

Please point me in the right direction to steel this awesome amazing phrase...just love it!

I guarantee if you ever see me out playing somewhere, I'll be butchering, er, I mean trying this phrase.

Wow, Ricky Davis is the Man!

That is a LLoyd Green lick, he has used it a lot.

Thanks Don...love that style.
Can anyone help with any insight into what strings/technique will get me in the ball park?

This style of phrasing really grabbed me and I'd love to explore it.

I really like the attacky' "do det do det do det" style of picking. ( yes those are musical terms)...although I might have one to many dets and not enough do's depending where you start the phrase. (1:36)

And then there's that ascending lick up above the 12th fret after that! Yikes!

That tone is another story...man this is a great piece of steel playing.

Mike thanks so much for the very kind words. I saw your request and actually called upon a couple of friends that tab sooooooo accurately over in the Tablature section>

https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=331570

Sorry I don't have time to tab. I did mention a hint of that quick three note repetitive part(that kinda counts out as quadruples I think..ha.) over there to Jeff....So look for it tabbed out eventually....and maybe what I hinted over there helps some.

Wow thanks guys, don't know what to say, other than I'm gonna work my butt off learning this.

Just amazing stuff Ricky...that must have been so fun to play. Perfect playing for the feel of the song and the artist.

Full disclosure...I plan to learn and overuse this lick by playing it in every song, every set I ever play.

If you think I'm joking, just ask anyone who's ever heard my 6 string playing!! :D

Well then here ya go Mike. Here I am with Dale in London....probably year 2000....this is a live CD and I rip into this total "in your face" solo with that fast quadruplet after the total Lloyd Green single string triplet climb up...then me and Dale finish it with a harmony total Merle Haggard signature....seeing that Dale wrote this song called "Help me Merle I'm breaking out in a "Nashville Rash"...
Ok you ready?

Solo starts at :058

Darn video isn't available in Canada, it's blocked. Thanks Youtube, or Nafta, or Shania Twain...whoever is in charge of that sort of thing.
Just as well though...I've already bitten off more than I can chew, and don't want my brain to explode (again).

OK, guys, here's the tab. I made it a separate thread in case somebody down the road is searching for it by song title. Enjoy!

Jeff that is so awesome okay new request from me.....ha
That last post of mine on this thread I put an audio file of me and Dale Watson live in London of a song he wrote called Nashville rash.
A very famous legendary steel guitar player mentor of mine, just emailed me some outrageously kind enthusiastic words about what he just heard me play in my solo and then me and Dale twinning parts to a Merle Haggard signature Melody. if You tab that solo out, I will put down what he wrote.

Soooooo..... did anyone ever tab out Ricky's "Nashville Rash" solo? I've got to hand it to guys like Ricky who can not just do what's on the record, but comes up with something original and, in this case, arguably even more fantastic.

Thanks Joe for the supportive words. I don't know if anyone tabbed my "Nashville Rash" solo; but here it is and what Lloyd Green said, with his very encouraging words:

No Joe that was a year or two just before I joined up with Dale in late '96.
https://youtu.be/mr4pfRb1viI
There's the original cut off "Cheatin Heart Attack" which was released on HighTone records; so that was either Marty Rifkin or Scott Walls on steel.
We did the LIVE version on the "Live in London" album>
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... DKb9tW1iVD
And Dale always wanted me to come up with and play like "Ricky Davis"; he always said: "I can tell when you are playing like yourself; you stick your chin out and just rip through it"...ha....
