There's a 1959 episode of the Dinah Shore Show, that has Alfred Apaka on it:

Starts around 31 minutes in, ends at 44 minutes.
Right around 34min+, he rejoins his band to do Mele Kalikimaka. The steel player looks to be playing...maybe?...a blonde Mk1 Fender 400, without pedals hooked up? Unless its something else, certainly doesn't look like a Magnatone.
Now, with the relative dearth of pictures or videos of Mr. Ah See, can anybody confirm if that's him? |

| Thanks! It sure looked like him, but AFAIK is only one of two videos that include him, at least on YouTube (the other being the Mapuana video, where is in front of a Magnatone, as I recall). |

Great video to see Jules actually playing. Notice how he goes back and forth on the two necks on that Fender 1000 steel (I had one myself for a few years) without the pedals hooked up.
His front neck is definitely tuned to his E13th with an F# fourth string...a beautiful sounding tuning that he and Barney seemed to use for improvisation on a tune. The back neck is probably C13.
So unfortunate that he died the following year...too soon. |

Ah, you're right, that is a 1000...looked smaller on first viewing.
That's the same arrangement as the Mele Kalikimaka on the Hawaiian Village Christmas EP.
That little act that followed about the birds in birdcages singing...apparently some Disney "Imagineers" were paying attention (Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room opened in 1963). |

That's quite a find. It makes you wonder what else is out there. Just for the record, the cockatoos are Australian, we have large flocks of them around here, screeching like something from the lost world.
