What are the different ways to hook up a preamp?
Does it depend on the amplifier, you are using?
Thanks

You can put it before or after the effects (or before some and after others).
You can put it before or after the volume pedal.
If you're running it in front of a regular amp, you can either turn the output way down and put it into the instrument output, or you can plug it into the power amp input of the "post gain" effects loop.

Most amps will NOT like it if you plug its line level output into the instrument-level input.
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

I have a G2 Mullen 9-5. Sarno Classic preamp. Telonics volume. DD-2 delay. I use Cryogenic strings. BS bar. 409
telonics pickup/ Sarno vari eze or Z. Milkman 85 sideman.
(and other steels, amplifiers and pedals) Canare GS-6
cables and plugs.

Here is What I have done. For the last 8 years, I have
tried to use the preamp, in front of the amplifier. When
I turned up the volume---I lost power in my amp.

This morning, I took the preamp out of the chain.
Now I have lots of headroom. I can do all the power
adjusting with the vari-eze.

Now I'm wondering how to get use of the preamp?
I' m going to not use the preamp, until I know what to
do with it.

Wow! I'm a slow learner.

The Milkman has its own built-in preamp; that's what the small tubes are for.
If some of your other amps have a power amp input jack, you could run the Sarno into that.
With the Milkman, the Sarno is redundant.
If you really want to use it in front of the Milkman, I'd ask Tim to fix a power amp input jack, but why?
