Hawaii Calls was a radio program that ran from 1935 through 1975 that featured live Hawaiian music conducted by Harry Owens for the first two years. It was broadcast each week, usually from the courtyard of the Sheraton Moana on Waikiki Beach but occasionally from other locations, and hosted by Webley Edwards for almost the entire run. Each show opened with the sounds of the pounding surf and the voice-over of Webley Edwards proclaiming, "The sound of the waves on the beach at Waikiki."Sadly, the courtyard has now been converted to an outdoor restaurant. However, the music must live on. Here is a tune, "Tradewind Island" that featured often. It was introduced to me some years back by Frank and Donna Miller who had a show of their own with Donna singing it beautifully. This is an instrumental version on steel guitar, A6 tuning. All accompaniments by me.

Kay, thanks for the post on Hawaii Calls, I'm a crazy-over-the-top fan of Webley Edwards and the radio show. I was at the Moana last year and took pictures of the courtyard. Old stage of Hawaii Calls is to the left of the tree, which is still looking good and strong. The new to me, Ala Moana Hotel is not forgetful of its history as upstairs near the stairwell is a small display/museum room featuring Hawaii Calls and even Alfred Apaka.

My dad listened to Jimmy Rodgers with whom I think was Cliff Carlisle back in the late 30's and knowing I already loved the sound of the steel guitar he showed me how to find Hawaii Calls on the short wave band of his radio, I was around five years old and have loved Hawaiian style music since. I still collect any authentic Polynesian style music
I run across. Over 70 years later I still prefer A 6 tuning when first doing the tabs.

Fine work as usual, Kay. In my view, the demise of Hawaii Calls, Hawaiian music, and instrumentals in general, is not so much one of taste, but a more cynical world.

Well I am pretty sure I will never make it to Hawaii, but listening to Kay play, seems like I am there. Bonus, for a lot less $$$$!

david: great to hear from you "down under".. this maybe just the time for a revival spurred by the craziness we are experiencing nowadays from politicians and from Mother Nature...
bill groner: that was a very high compliment! but save up your $$$$ and do visit...hawaii is the friendliest place i know...with such a love for music...you will feel quite a home..

Yes Kay, still going and will be 83 in a couple of days but as Bill Carlisle used to say; I just can't jump as high as I used too. I still try to collect all the authentic music recordings and especially sheet music and history of the players. Some players living in the islands now tell me it is very hard to find printed versions of the old music in Hawaii these days.
