Latest Win 10 update causing desktop errors

Post by Rick Stratton »

Anybody else having weird stuff happen after this week's updates?
Probably not too important, but my desktop icons keep re-arranging themselves on reboot or explorer use! Who knows what else has been affected.

I'm not having any problems.

Run a full malware scan (with Malwarebytes).

Check for a video driver update

Thanks for the quick reply Jack!
I updated my video driver recently and ran scans.
Also I keep getting a pop-up wanting me to setup One-Drive

I have one drive set up as I have MS Office 365 but rarely use it.

Because of the security updates in the Tuesday updates I don't recommend falling back.

Do you have the Creators Upgrade?

FWIW, my Win 10 is completely up to date and I have no issues. I'll reboot later and report back if anything weird happens.

I'm not sure what the creators update is. Mine was automatic.

My reboot was uneventful. No issues. Drag that you've got gremlins.

Rick;
Was your computer perfectly stable until the last Windows updates? If so, it could be that the video driver got updated to a Microsoft version and is not 100% compatible with your hardware. You can rollback that driver, reboot and see if the icons are back to normal.

If not, move on...

If all was well and is not anymore, update your anti-virus and anti-malware programs and run full systems scans (separately). If there is an option to scan for rootkits, check it. If malware is found, have it removed, reboot, then scan again. There are persistent types of malware that use rootkits and bootkits to reinfect a computer.

If you have activity lights on your modem or router, look for rapid fluttering that indicates heavy activity. This could be a visual indication of an illicit Bitcoin miner, or data miner in action, or that your PC may be participating in a denial of service attack, all due to malware.
