Question about the n/v 400 vrs. the n/v 1000 this might sound dum but which amp can u get the best tone from, with a good mod? I don't use a regular amp and have very little experience with them. thanks

There are design differences. But, I own and play the Nashville 400 but always preferred the 1000. It's your choice.

I've had both, a NV 400 with the Peavey service center installed tone mod (before delivery when new) and a NV1000 and used them on the road. The NV1000 wins for me.

The bigger cab of the 1000 tends to give better tone

I've owned maybe 6 or 7 NV400's and a Nashville 1000 and got good tone from both. I did however like the tone I got a from the 1000 slightly better but it quit working during several gigs and had to sent back to Peavey two different times for repair. I never had to send back any of the 400's

I'd stay with the 400 if I had to do it again.

I'm going to go to bat again for the 1000. I used it for years and the weight/power/tone/price ratio is unmatched by any, in my opinion. I've retired my Nashville 1000 from "active gigging duty", but it sits next to my steel I keep out and assembled at all times at home and I use it for practice still.

put them on a scale , which one weighs less, thats the one to keep !

The question is just way to subjective as they are both great amps, yet slightly different . Both are mid range strong to my ears, but very workable.

Player A loves one, player B loves the other one. This tally will go on forever !

I have owned three N400's, still own one, I have owned one N1000. To me they are the same . Sure some slight variations on EQ here and there but either one is a good choice.

I recently picked up my current N400 in excellent shape, it was $325. Thats why I bought it. It wouldn't have mattered if it was a N1000, I would have bought it.

pick one , don't look back.

Pedal steel guitar player's evolution:

Step 1 - Play a PSG tuned equal tempered through a 6 string guitar amplifier. (Sounds like a whiny 6 string guitar played by someone who has had too many beers )

Step 2 - Play the PSG through a proper PSG amp, either the stock Nashville 400 or 1000 or others for example. (Huge improvement of tone)

Step 3 - Tune to tempered or JI (Starting to really sound like classic PSG now)

Step 4 - Upgrade to a modified Nashville 400 if you are using a stock amp. (More refined and vivid tone)

Step 5 - Replace the stock speaker with one customized to your needs (A truly authentic and inspiring tone)

Steve, that depends on your 6-string amp. You can't convince me that anything with Nashville in the name will sound better than a Twin.
Lloyd often uses a smaller Fender (I want to say Deluxe).

I agree that old Fenders, especially Twin Reverbs and Super Reverbs are great all around amps with lots of clean power, spank and attitude that work great for PSG. And IMO the Nashville's really need a speaker upgrade to get into the outstanding tone category.

P.S. I believe Lloyd has recently been using a Telonics amplification system, which are certainly among the very best you can get either for playing live or recording with the DI channels.
