I've been enjoying the heck out of Gary's playing recently, both the Lighthouse Tales video and on Marty Stuart's show.
In the video you can see a Peavey amp at one point, wondering if that's what he's using there? Sure is an awesome tone.
The TV show lists Fender amps as a sponsor, and I did spot a Fender back by Gary the other day.
Also, at one point in the video it looks like he has a 4th string 1-1/2 tone lower, maybe on the vertical lever? Has anybody ever heard of that change, or am I seeing wrong? It happens at 1:46, big change in pitch but doesn't look like his hand moves...

Thanks Sid! But he's probably way too busy for me to bother about something like that.

However, if Gary happened to check back in on this thread...

Tim
I'm using a steel king or a hotrod deluxe on the tv show. Depends on the day. I also use a Nashville 112 sometimes on live gigs.
The change you are hearing at 1:46 is, I'm raising the second string LR 1/2 step then lower it a full step on RR pedal so you hear a step and a half lower.
Thanks for watching the vid. Taping some more the 28th of this month.

Tab?

I'd gladly pay someone to tab this out. Especially with the foot shots it lends itself to be an excellent instructional video too!

This is worth reviving.

I just heard Gary Carter playing 'The Lighthouse Tale.'

I can only repeat what other members said, and hope someone else sees this and it catches on.

Simply dynamite.

I'm glad you revived this, because I might not have ever seen it if you didn't, and what a video! I've always loved this song, I never thought I'd hear it on steel!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how good the other instruments sound in this recording. The steel is fantastic, but the guitar and mandolin also sound great. And the recording as a whole! This is just awesome.

Simply outstanding!

Benjamin Jayne wrote:Anyone know how he gets that cool tone around 3:35-3:51? Is it a VP technique? Doesn't look like he clicked any pedals, but the tone all of a sudden resembles more of a synth to me, and then he goes back to the traditional tone afterwards...really cool, just wish I knew how it was done!
He appears to move his right hand nearer to the first harmonic node halfway between the bridge and the bar, which changes the harmonic content, and at 3:51 his picking hand returns to its former position. Very subtle, really masterful.

Memphis, the other instrumental I have is Billy Joel's And So It Goes which you may have seen.
