Here is one of our last projects me and James did together and it's one of the most famous steel guitars in history and still on display in the Country music hall of fame in Nashville.

I just heard from the family. He wasn't in pain, and was with his loved ones. Too soon, too hard, we've lost a giant, he loved the pedal steel guitar. I pray that James has peace, finally. Condolences to Tree. She has been so brave.

This is sad news. So sorry to hear of James' passing.
He really had a tough go of it, ever since his accident when he hurt his hand, and I know that he and Tree fought long and hard for the last couple of years.
My heart goes out to Tree... we should all be so lucky to have someone fight so hard for us.

James was really passionate about Buds... I remember him showing me his Fingertip in Dallas, and he was so proud of it. Recently, I was at Jim Palenscar's store in Oceanside, where there was a Professional that James had converted to 2 hole pullers & barrels. It was one of the best playing Buds I've ever played.
I once asked him about making some teardrop levers for my Super Pro, and he was glad to do it... They couldn't have been cooler, and now they're even more so.

We've lost a good one...
Tree, please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and yours.

Vaya con Dios, James...

What a sad day. Though I never had a need for James' services, I held him in the highest regard as a master of Sho-Bud repairs and rebuilds.

He will be sorely missed. My prayers go out for him and him loved ones.
Best regards,
Mike

Sorry to hear this news. James and I had many long phone conversations about old shobuds and new designs and plans for the future in pedal steel. He will be missed.

When I first bought a steel guitar in late 2007 I was searching for lessons in Oklahoma City. Some search results led me to an email address to a guy in Prague, OK. I emailed, James responded quite quickly, very excited to provide me with lessons. I drove out on a January Saturday afternoon, went down a long gravel road, then a winding left turn brought me to James and Trees' place. I unloaded my Carter Starter and went in and introduced myself and shook hands, started setting up. As I was setting up, I thought, "something isn't right here". I was new to pedal steel so I looked the guitar over and thought to myself, "You idiot, you forgot your pedal board". I felt pretty stupid looking up to this guy I just met and had to tell him I had forgotten a pretty important part of the guitar. He and Tree kinda laughed, James said that was ok and let me play his daughters beautiful Sho Bud. He proceeded to explain how the E9 neck works and I felt like I was finally going to learn how to make honky tonk music.
Over the next few years James taught me a lot and helped a ton with guitar issues. I eventually bought a beautiful 73 sho bud with the help of James and he got that guitar into amazing playing condition. I eventually made another bad decision and sold it, I fooled around with Fender 1000s and non pedal guitars for a couple years and James and I didn't see each other quite as much. Then, James met Ed Rhea who had a 59 or 60 Sho Bud. It was/is kinda the perfect guitar for me and he worked his tail off getting it to play the way I needed it to. James was so good with Sho Buds.....I knew at the time I wasn't taking advantage of his knowledge and should've been learning all I could from him about these guitars and getting them to play perfect!
I said in another thread I'd give anything to drive down that gravel road again and pick on the steel with James and watch him work. And his amps! The best sounding amps ever. Hazelnut coffee will always make me think of James. He is a very important loss to the steel guitar world, especially us Sho Bud guys. I know James fought hard and I'm very sad. Tree let me know if there's anything I can do.
I always loved James Cowboy proverb in his sig tag here on the forum. I think it was, 'Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment'.

I love you James, I'll miss you. RIP my friend:

I will miss our long talks about the steels, country music and life. I could write so much about James but will save it for conversations with mutual friends. I will miss him dearly. Prayers for Tree and all the family.

I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. I feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to meet James. I brought my old Sho Bud Professional to a jam at the American Legion in East Moline because I knew he'd be there and I wanted him to look it over. He had one just like it, but of course his looked like it was brand new. I had a great time playing steel and talking about Sho Bud's with James. He was a great guy and really new his stuff when it came to Sho Buds. My condolences go out to Tree and the rest of his family and friends. May he RIP.
