Accompaniment (Comping) on the PSG C6th

Post by Sez Adamson »

Hi Folks,
Health warning: If you are a dedicated E9th player, this may not be for you.

I have been working on some Comping exercises for quite a while now.
These exercises are from the Barry Galbraith Comping book (published by Jamey Aebersold). The book comes with a CD with the guitar (Barry Galbraith) on one side of the stereo, and the bass (Milt Hinton), on the other.

I replaced the Guitar track with Pedal Steel Guitar.

It's very much a technical exercise, and perhaps not as listenable to as an arrangement of a nice tune. But I want to improve my comping knowledge and skills in case I ever get to play this kind of music with anybody. It's been quite an experience for me to be on the same CD with Milt Hinton, who was one of the giant bass players of the Jazz era 50's to 80's or thereabouts. Check him and Barry out on Google.

If there's nothing in this for you, I totally understand. This is not generally the kind of music one associates with the Pedal Steel Guitar, so you won't hurt my feelings.
Thanks, Sez.

My ears like this stuff. Those chords would be quite impressive if written in algebraic; or blended as colors. Your skill shows that much is possible. Thanks for sharing.
