Advice for Sellers - PLEASE READ

Post by b0b »

A few things to consider before posting your ad:

In this phpBB software, a person must be logged in to send you an email. If you want to sell to people who aren't members of the Steel Guitar Forum, you will have to include some sort of contact information in your ad.

The "Subject" of your ad should tell the reader what you are selling. If it doesn't, people who aren't interested in it will open the topic out of curiosity. This wastes server bandwidth and annoys people.

Regarding "new" items, the Forum Membership Agreement states:
Posting of discount retail prices for new merchandise in the Classified Ads section is prohibited. Readers can be directed to call or email for a discount price instead. Prices may be posted for "used" merchandise.
This rule was created to discourage price wars among vendors. If you bought an item at retail and never used it, you can advertise it as "like new" and post any price you want. But if you say that it's "new", you aren't allowed to post a price lower than the manufacturer's suggested retail price unless you are the sole source of the item.

Removing Unhelpful Comments

Post by b0b »

When you post an ad in our Classified Ads sections, you are considered to be the "owner" of the topic. If you feel that someone's comments are undermining your sale, you can ask the moderator by email to delete those comments. It's a manual process that may take a day or two, but we do try to honor all such requests.

Be specific in your request. Include your username, the topic title, the forum section, and the name of the member who posted the unhelpful reply. Be sure to send it via email to the moderator.

John McClung suggests:

"Include sharp photos showing all areas of the steel you're selling, including a clear shot of the changer's tuning rods so number of raises and lowers can easily be seen, as well as whether the steel has split screws. Clear photos of the undercarriage of pedal steels are always quite helpful to buyers and browsers, too."

Good advice.

What to do when your item sells

Post by b0b »

If you post something for sale and the item gets sold, please POST A REPLY to the original message saying that it is sold. The moderator will see the reply and lock the topic. There is no need to email the moderator.

Use of the Classified Ads section to sell steel related items is generally free*, but most folks send a donation when they sell a big ticket item through the Forum. The conventional donation amount is 2.5% of the selling price of the item ($25 for a $1000 instrument, for example). You can send your donation by check or money order payable in US funds to:

Steel Guitar Forum LLC
PO Box 237
Mount Horeb, WI 53572

For your convenience, we also accept credit card donations via PayPal. Click here to make a donation.

*Note that we require people who drive traffic to their ads on other sites (EBay, Craigslist, etc.) to pay the Forum a 2.5% finders fee if the item is bought by a Forum member.

Remember that the Forum is supported by your donations and by sales from the Forum Catalog. Without that income, we couldn't keep it going.

Thanks for your support.
