"The pedal steel couldn’t yet make the music Emmons heard in his head, so he changed the instrument, coming up with the three-pedal array that became the industry standard, still known as ‘‘the Emmons setup.’’ "

It was a long scroll down to get to the Emmons piece, but a nice surprise to also run across a piece on Phil Levine. Phil was one of my Dad's closest high school & college pals in Detroit long before he became a poet.

very nice piece indeed... The line where the author wrote
"the pedal steel is to country music what the electric guitar is to urban blues" is a very bitter pill to me, because sadly, that hasn't been the case for many years.. Yes the electric guitar is still the backbone of the blues, to this very day, but the pedal steel is largely irrelevant to popular country music in the modern age, save for lesser known and regional performers.
Still its nice to see Buddy's astounding contributions to the music world in general and steel guitar music in particular acknowledged and celebrated... bob

i think the statement is right on. like the
'countrypolitan' era of country music which traded steel guitar for strings, this modern trend of testosterone driven guitars will also pass eventually and steel will continue to be the distinguishing factor in country music.
that's what it was designed for. people will grow out of tailgate sex and drinking and get back to the important aspects of life....like the green grass, a guard, and a sad old padre.

I really liked seeing this line in there:

"...a perfect instrument for expressing complex feeling."
