Why, with the Time Jumpers of course!

The Time jumpers were their typically wonderful selves at Carnegie Hall last night ..Of course we miss the stellar Dawn Sears, but the men stepped up and put on a great show. Paul played a particularly soulful solo on James Taylor's Bartenders Blues,(one of the few times he stepped up to the E9 neck after a night of blazing C6 mastery, and it was chicken skin good) He was brilliant throughout the evening(as they all were). PF was kind enough to have a brief chat and pic, after the show.

Kudos and thanks to the entire band.

Now for me...practice practice practice...hahaha.

One of the few times I wish I still lived in NYC.(The other was for the Cream reunion) I woulda been there!

We never get any good shows like that in Florida!

I was there too... great show. I went there for the pedal steel, of course, but Vince's voice was the highlight of the show for me.... and his guitar playing wasn't too shabby either.

I've been to hear the Time Jumpers several times and they just don't do it for me. I really can't explain why, I really like western swing and have really enjoyed other bands. Of course I liked a few of their songs but overall they just didn't impress me. I have talked with others that feel the same way, even people who were long time fans of western swing. I don;t know if its just individual differences in the way we perceive music or there is something about their style that I don't particularly like.

Wow Darrel, someone who doesn't like the time jumpers!
Is it for the fact you feel they don't necessarily play the classic western swign style whereby the band is kinda like an orchestra driving home a melody?
For me, their virtuosity is enough.

I don't dislike them, I just don't feel like most people feel about how great they are. That is not to say they aren't great, they just don't have a particular appeal for me, I really don't have an explanation as to why. I have talked with professional musicians in Nashville that feel the same way. I guess its just individual tastes.

Wow, now that is interesting, and I respect your opinion. For me, the virtuosic talent of every member of the band is so jaw-dropping that I can't wait to hear what each player is gonna play on their solo. Maybe that's the thing: they really are a musician's band - a way to feature the very best and brightest that Nashville has to offer, take off the shackles of studio work, turn them loose and let them play! (In that regard, they are like The Players, who are also A-Team Nashville studio pros, with Paul F. appearing in both groups. Though I don't hear much about the Players these days; are they still gigging occasionally?)

Very interesting comments. I know a steel player who went and saw the Time Jumpers and he was disappointed. That really surprises me. Myself I find them to be a great group.

Funny thing is the reason I went to see the Time Jumpers is because I listened to Joe Spivey 30 years ago when he played in a little band in Colorado Springs and knew he was a great fiddle player. After 30 years I remembered his name and wanted to see if he was still in Colorado Springs and found out he was with the Time Jumpers.

Along the same lines there are some of the steel players who most people think are the best who just don't do much for me, I've talked to them and they are great people, their playing just does't inspire me. There are others who I will travel across at the country to listen to. My musician friend in Nashville feels the same way about some of these steel players. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate them, or even enjoy some of their playing, its just they don't have that unique appeal to me.

I did go to this particular gig with several NYC producers and engineers. They had had enough of the Texas swing numbers after about half an hour. The 2 straight up country songs (Together Again, and Bartender's Blues) knocked them out... they didn't know how soulful that music can be. They were also impressed with the 2 more or less blues numbers, and the couple of big band swing arrangements.
They are all good players but Vince is a super star and it shows.
I had a good time, even though I'm not generally a fan of endless, mile a minute, solos.

I liked the band before we lost John and Dawn. Still, they are a great group of players but it seems they're more of a Vince Gill/Paul Franklin show, with the Time Jumpers as a backing band.

But I wouldn't quite call 'em a "Western Swing" band. Just a damned good band, that plays a few Western Swing tunes. Sorta like the Punch Brothers--a great group of musicians, who occasionally play a bluegrass tune.

Tom Morell and the Time-Warp Top Hands.
