Playback Unit that loweres speed but keeps Key

Post by Jeff Hyman »

Hello All,
Sorry if I may be posting in the wrong section, but it's been
a long time since I've been away from this Forum.
QUESTION: Is there a unit (for practice) that will allow to slow down a song, and at the same time NOT lower the Key ?
Any help and feedback is appreciated.

Audacity is a good totally free program. You can change the speed
up or down without changing the key, and you can also change the
key and do a lot of other things with it, like add a click count at the
beginning of a track so you know where to start it.
I use this program all the time for myself and for teaching.
Check it out or download it here. http://www.audacityteam.org/

Carl,
thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded the program and got a
warning it may contain a virus. I'm running Windows 7 Pro.
Any known problems with viruses on this product?
NOTE: I am not a Windows guy. I was impressed they have a Linux version but I have no Linux laptop.
I've involved with Unix/Linix since 1983. www.CACTUS.com

Hey Jeff, you might take a look at riffstation. I believe they have a free trial copy you can download and if you decide to purchase it it's not real expensive..$25? Here's a youtube video about it - there are also other youtube demos people have done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX0HxLDPYcU

for some reason I can't get the riffstation site to load tonite but it's at www.riffstation.com

I've found it real handy for transcribing steel parts. Not only will it spit out the basic chords as the song tracks along in sort of an oscilloscope presentation, but you can also slow things way down without changing the key...or you can deliberately change the key if you want. You also can somewhat isolate instruments (depending on how it was recorded) if you're trying to concentrate on bass, guitar or steel.

I heard it reviewed on Bryan Daste's steel podcast site and decided to try it out...so far so good.

Windows Media Player can do that, and it's included free with the Windows operating system.

Jeff,
From the screen shots it appears this is a piece of hardware
yet I'm not convinced it's not a software product. This is a dumb question, but is this product a hardware unit running software, or just software installed on a PC ?
The product looks really good! Thanks!

Jeff, Audacity does not contain any viruses. I've been using it for years.
I have it on all my computers which are all Windows XP and my new Win 8.1.
I'm using version 2.0.6 the newest version is 2.1.0, if you want to use it,
make sure you download Lame as well. You'll need it and it's also free.

Reiterating an answer above, Windows Media Player, free and installed on most PC's, will play your whole music library at half speed for free.

BestPractice is a free program that will let you slow down, speed up, or change key of songs.
Pedal steel, lap steel, resonator, blues harp - why suck at just one instrument when you can do so on many?

Since you are a Linux user, Play it Slowly will do all you need and some more.
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/play-it-slowl ... pitch.html

You can even mark the start and end position of portions of the track so you practice just certain parts with automatic replay. I use it all the time. And it's free.
