How much difference would there be in string tension between a 24" scale and a 23" scale.
I'm wondering if I could get away with putting slightly heavier strings on my old Shobud 23" scale Crossover. Would that inch make a "regular" E9 set just a tad loose? The guitar has pretty poor sustain and I wonder if a bit of added string tension might help that.
Thoughts?

| I don't know about on normal guitar but on bass not only going up in gauge but also using strings with hex cores help. |

I already use a .012 on the 3rd string, it sounds good and feels right.
Any other thoughts about the difference in string tension 23 versus 24 inch scale?

| Using 'Arto's String Calculator' site tells me that a .012" string (for the 3rd string) on a 23" scale is at 34 lbs tension, which is more than tight enough |

The .012 was an experiment in better balance. That's what made me wonder if the whole guitar is low in tension.

Well, this subject made it back to the front burner (or into the active loop in my brain) after a while exploring non-pedal fun.
What does anyone think about the original post: the question of a 23" scale steel being better off with heavier strings?

I doubt if you will ever get an equal amount of sustain from a 23" scale length as from a 24" scale.
In my mind's eye, the longer the scale, the longer the sustain. |

I don't expect "equal" I guess, just wondering if anyone has direct experience with gaining sustain from heavier strings.
Before I buy a bunch of strings to try it I thought I might see what has been learned.
