Do any of you Americans who have bought items from Canadian sellers have knowledge of whether the goods are taxed or hit with customs duties when they enter the USA?. I thought the NAFTA TREATY did away with customs and/or duties with trade between Cananda, Mexico and the USA but a Canadian seller said the following:

And no, the US federal government does not charge duty or tax on importing a Canadian made product from Canada into the US. Courier companies will charge to clear the item through US customs but if the instrument is shipped via United Stated Postal System, there is no charge for customs clearance.

Another Canadian Forum member claimed goods coming into Canada from the USA were taxed at a 13% rate by the Canadian government. If any of you have first hand experience or knowledge about this, please chime in. Thanks, stevet

Steve, Over the years I have bought a lot of stuff from the US and sent to me in BC Canada. If the item is made in the USA, there is no duty, however, if the item is over $200.00, customs will collect the provincial and federal tax amounting to 12% here in BC. If the item is valued at under $200.00 they won't bother if shipped through the US post office. If the item comes by UPS, they collect the 12% tax on everything and also charge a big "brokerage" fee for clearing it through customs. I try to avoid having anything shipped by UPS.

With the U.S. dollar now valued at about $1.26 Cdn, that in itself will more than offset any duty, taxes or brokerage fees you may incur. Two years ago the two currencies were at par but right now it's a buyers marker for anyone in the U.S. wanting to make purchases in Canada.
