Greetings everyone. I am a long term steel admirer and recent convert, I found an old MSA sidekick for sale and grabbed it to get started. It seems to have an issue with the sole knee lever. The 8th string E is working but the 4th is not. The 4th string is working fine with the pull from pedal 3. I have uploaded a quick video trying to demonstrate the issue. I have googled and messed with it extensively and any now at a total head scratching brick wall. the knee mechanism seem s to be functioning and not binding. In all my searches I can't seem to find an MSA steel with the same mechanics as this one??? (see video)

also, I have seen Reece Anderson on here being immensely helpful with background info. I would love any on this - serial number 1 T 4629

thanks in advance and looking forward to getting to know and learn from you all.

Cheers, Bryan

I'm kind of a newb here, but I believe that, sadly, Reece has passed away.

Good luck on the MSA. I'm just getting my Classic set up and working well myself.

I've looked at your video, and it seems to me that the 4th string tuning screw (arrowed in red) needs to be backed out, to allow the string to lower.

That's typical of many student guitars from 40 years ago.

Winnie Winston's book is written for that configuration. It's a good book to get you started.

As Mike said, many student guitars with one knee lever often lowered the 2nd string instead of the 4th in combination with the 8th string.

Check to see if your Sidekick is set up this way. If so, not sure it can be changed easily, if at all.

It's not the end of the world. After all, Lloyd Green made some pretty good music without lowering his 4th string.

Thank you all for the info. So sorry to hear about Reece.

Richard, if backed out further, would I use the collar to keep it for just resting all the way back? Does that make sense?
