I have a Carter Pro with 4 pedals. The first 3 are standard Emmons, with the 4th pedal set up to drop the 5th and 6th strings down a full step (to A and F#). My PS teacher at the time (he has since moved out of the area) helped me find the steel and told me it was the Franklin pedal.
I've been playing for nearly a year and didn't worry about this pedal since I had my hands full with the rest. Now I'm curious and from my searches and reading, I haven't found anywhere that this is a common set up, but maybe it is. Can you tell me if it is common and how it is typically used, or maybe a more useful way to tune/use it? Best I can figure with the way it is right now is a 2m7 without the 5...

That is a very common pedal, and probably the most used changes on a fourth pedal. Most usually drop the tenth string to A with it.
And, it is commonly referred to as " the Franklin Pedal". _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 55 years and still counting. |

Does a "Franklin Pedal" usually drop 5, 6 and 10 a whole tone? _________________ GFI Ultra S10 Keyless

The 4th pedal Franklin tuning I have dated 6/21/2011 from b0b lists, 5th string to A, 6th string to F# and the 10th string to A, all 3 lowers. I want to try this myself. Good Luck and Happy Steelin. |

And, we can go even farther. Some have it set up to just lower 5 & 6 (that's the basis of this thread). Some only lower 5 & 10 and have the 6th string lower on a knee lever. I imagine somewhere, someone probably just lower 5 with the pedal and lowers 6 with a knee lever.
Personally, I had the Franklin Pedal, even bought Paul's course on the pedal, and still never used it. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . There are plenty of people on this forum who can correct me, but I am certain that Mr Franklin said in an interview (rig run-down?) that the motivation for wanting to drop 5 & 6 together on the same pedal was to copy certain piano idioms. Didn't elucidate, just implied that it suited the work he was doing at the time. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!
