Front or Rear Mounting of Speaker

Apologies if this may have been discussed elsewhere.

I'm wondering if anyone can say from experience whether speakers mounted onto the back of the baffle board (eg. Peaveys) provide superior tone over those that are front-mounted.

I don't know if you could call one or the other "superior", it's just a slightly different sound. To be honest, there are so many other variables (baffle size and thickness, the way the baffle is mounted, the number of speakers, size and type of enclosure, type of speaker, etc.) that it is probably a non-issue for pedal steel use. It's much more of an issue in hi-fi systems. (Musical instrument amplifiers are about as far from "hi-fi" as you can get.)

In my tests with Evans combo amps, front mounting the speaker sounded better and had a wider dispersal to my ears than when it was rear mounted. So, I always front mount the speaker.
