The loss of another great steel player has affected us again. I loved to hear Dickey play and he could make that steel guitar cry. Sadly, 2014 will go down as a very rough year with the loss of Weldon Myrick, Bobby Bowman, Jack Smith and now Dickey Overby plus others I did not know. RIP Dickey and play for the heavenly band. I know they will welcome you with open arms. |

Ronnie Milsap posted this today on Facebook... Dicky Overbey went "HOME" today. I'm glad he's no longer in pain, but I will surely miss him everyday. To say he was the best steel player I've ever known is an understatement. When he started working with me he taught me more about Country Music than anyone I've ever known...he even loaned me his "prized" record collection. You'll hear him on a lot of my records including my first "Live" album. So tonight Dicky, when you hear "When They Ring Those Golden Bells For You and Me", you'll know God's speaking to you and I'll be right there with you. Love you my brother. Rest In Peace. |

Although it was to be expected, it is still so sad to get the final fact. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dickey' family.
Thanks for the wonderful music you gave us. RIP, Dickey.

Sad day today.
I'll sure miss Dicky. To see his face glow with pleasure when a group of us from the Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Fame came to his home to present him with his HOF plaque was a special moment.
Somehow I remembered that at Jimmy Day's gravesite service, a musician friend of mine that Jimmy had worked with said to me "well, every steel player just got one rung higher on the ladder, didn't they."
I knew what he meant, and I feel the same way about Dicky. Once again, there's an empty space up at the top.
I feel that musically, Dicky and Jimmy Day were cut from the same cloth, if you will, or drank from the same well; both were singers and songwriters with things to say but primarily chose to bare their raw emotions with the steel guitar, most especially the E9 tuning. They both wrote beautiful songs that were recorded by major country singers. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Those "empty spaces" at the top, are sure hard to fill. Players like Dicky leave a big hole in the steel guitar world when they leave us. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Another of those who define "The Gold Standard" of steel-players is gone and we are all diminished by this loss.
I have been listening to his playing quite a lot lately, captivated by the smoothness, fluidity and phrasing. He signed his name on his work with every note.
RIP Dickey Overbey. I respectfully add my sincerest condolences to his many friends and extended family. _________________ The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being. |

I've been a long time fan of Dickey's style.....a style that came from using a standard set-up( I think).
Years ago Tommy Detamore told me that Dickey had remarked to him that all a player needed to play real country music was 3 pedals and 2 knee levers.
Fortunate to see him play with Amber Digby's band at the Helotes Cornyval a few years back.....early model LDG thru a Fender tube amp and no effects other than amp reverb....his tone was just unbelievable!!!
A true MASTER of the steel guitar!!! _________________ Cremation is my last shot at having a hot body...... |

A great example of this concept , is watching the YouTube videos when he played for Amber using Randy Lindley's Sho~Bud LDG. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . .....I forgot to mention that another possible reason for his great tone was that Dickey played without shoes....just socks. _________________ Cremation is my last shot at having a hot body...... |

Dicky Overbey to me was a unique and really great steelguitarist because he always played with such intensity and soul. He was one of my steel-heroes. When i first saw him with Faron Young in Road to Nashville i was blown away, to my ears it was "different", steel with a rock&roll attitude (or something like that). And that intensity still was there in all the recent video's on Youtube. Thanks for all the great music. My condolences to his family. |
