Amber Digby posted this evening: "I've been given the okay by Mom to let people know that my Step Dad, Dicky Overbey, has been moved to a Hospice house facility and has been given hours-days to live. They are keeping him comfortable at this point-sedated. Please refrain from messaging me. Due to circumstances, I will not be able to answer you. Your love and prayers for peace for our family is greatly appreciated."
Dicky has been a phenomenal steel player, producing music and tones nearly impossible to duplicate. And he's a songwriter! |

I truly am shocked to hear this, and think "oh, no, not another one going away". I only knew Dicky briefly while in Florida, but there was something magical about his playing as I sat and watched him become a living part of the instrument. My prayers for him & family are already going up. ... _________________ Mullen Lacquer SD 10, 3 & 5; Mullen Mica S 10 1/2 pad, 3 & 5; BJS Bars; LTD400, Nashville 112, DD-3, RV-3, Hilton VP . -- Gold Tone PBS sq neck; Wechter Scheerhorn sq neck. -- "Experience is the thing you have left when everything else is gone." -anon.- |

Thanks to Amber for letting us all know of this.
This is heartbreaking to hear about this.
So very sad.
May he be made comfortable as much as is possible.
Our thoughts & prayers go out for this one of a a kind steel player!

Sad to hear this. I first became a fan of his after hearing his work on a Darrell McCall album.
Prayers for the family in these last days. |

Truly sorry to hear about Dicky. In fact, I just heard today (10/02/14) that Dicky HAS passed away. I live very close to him, and would see him every now and then at the grocery store, dances, etc. Fabulous player and fine gentleman. _________________ Rains D-10 by Gary Carpenter |

There have been no other reports of this. I would think that Randy and Amber would say something on here and Facebook if that were the case. I think it would be best to delete your post until there is a dependable confirmation from the family. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I don't know Mr. Overbey and I don't know anyone who knows Mr. Overbey, as far as I know. The article at http://garyhayescountry.com/steel-guitar-legend-dickey-overbey-loved-by-many/ is dated October 2 (doesn't have a time of day) and includes the following:

Randy Lindley and Amber have a post on Facebook where they said they had Amber's mother's permission to post about Dicky being moved to hospice. There has been no updates from either of them. I think we should wait until we hear from the family and not someone who "heard" something without some other confirmation. My aplogies will go out to Owen should his info is correct. I think it is too premature to state that if the family, who has kept us informed in the past, doesn't tell us or authorize someone else to deliver the news. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . So sorry to hear about Dickey. His phenomenal performance on Milsap Live inspired me to take up the steel, even though I didn't get the chance until about a decade ago. |

Alan,
I'm with you on Ronnie's live album. That slide that Dicky did on "Busy Making Plans" got my attention. It seems like he made that slide last forever. I lost track of him for a long time, then I was working with Leona Williams several years ago and she gave me a CD that Dicky was playing on. Since then I've bought up everything I could get that Dicky was on, and went to Nashville to see him with Amber several times. Most definitely one of the most enjoyable players I've ever heard. Dicky and the family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I have that live Milsap record somewhere. That's where I first got into Dicky. If I heard him on other stuff, I didn't know it. What an incredible player.
