Maybe Cowboy Eddie Long. He'd worked with Hank in the eighties |

I figure that since Eddie Long played steel for Hank, Jr, for so 20 years and took over right after Dicky, that he should know who played on the record.
Eddie says the record was cut right before he got the job, so Dicky has to show him the intro lick. |

I have a question about this song. Behind it is a more general question about steel.
There are a couple YouTube lessons, and they both involve starting at the third fret and sliding up to the tenth ( with ... three stops between ) for the first couple measures. This is very doable. But!
It's completely possible to hold the B pedal down and play that sequence with a lot less bar motion, sorta scooping each note.
I would imagine one answer might be "well, learn how to plant the dadgum bar" but it seems there's less *risk* in using less bar motion no matter how precise you are with it.
I expect the second half of the answer is that there is more ... glissando to the sound if you move the bar.
I'm mainly curious about what gets traded off in decisions like this. And yes - lessons would probably be a better venue for this sort of question. |

I've heard Dicky play stuff that sounded like Hughey. The man has really got it. He really doesn't get the credit he should get. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Les, The method you use that sounds the closest to the original cut is the best one to use......... there are a lot of Youtube videos that sound similar to the intended result.....but aren't really close, IMHO |

Les,
Try
Str 6 - slide fret 6 to fret 8
Str 5 - slide fret 8 to fret 10
Stay fret 8, str 5, 6Bpedal, 8, scooping string 5 up with Apedal |

Roger that, Dean - but I bet I could get the basic idea across about five different ways. |

I've been trying to figure out that intro for weeks! I can hear all the notes, but can't quit get in the right position to make all the moves that sounds like what he's playing...except for the very last move of the intro that Mickey teaches as one of his "3 Moves To Master". Of course it's in part II, so it's actually the 4th move of 6 moves to master...sorry I digress... |

Les: Thanks for the links!
I was trying to make it more difficult than it is. I've figured out much more difficult solos than that intro. For some reason, I just couldn't hear where to go. Thanks again. |

The interesting part is the sequence with the leading tones F-E-G-E-D - Bbmin-Amin-C-C/G-Ddom7. |

But it's Amin G C/G
Play the Bbmin Amin with BC pedals, then open for G while you move your foot to get ready for the AB pedals for the C/G chord. |
