Johnny Cox
The first time I went to St. Louis was 1999, when I had just retired and took up steel for my hobby. I went down for breakfast, at the Millenium Hotel, and I sat at a table next to Johnny Cox. I didn't know who he was at that time. Anyway, as I ate breakfast I noticed that everyone that came in the restaurant stopped by Johnny's table to visit. I was thinking, that guy must be famous. Indeed he was. Johnny is one of the best ever.
Sorry you are not on the program, Johnny, but, heck, show up anyway, and do the jams in the vendor rooms. A lot of folks would love to hear you.

I really missed Johnny Cox this year. I kind of find it hard to understand that Doug Jernigan is on at 3 different times, and Johnny Cox not once. Johnny Cox is a true master of our instrument and should have been invited to share his awesome love and talent of our beloved instrument.

I can remember a time several, several years back when I got a song put on "hold" in the afternoon. Then went to Rio Bravo for a Chimichanga. Then went to a honky tonk on Broadway, I think it was next door to Wolfie's, can't remember the name. On stage was Johnny Cox playing some great steel. Ice cold draws and hearing Johnny play some great shuffles, Just a great day, you couldn't ask for anything better. Johnny added a lot of enjoyment to it.
Everyone ought to be able to enjoy Johnny's playing, put him on the show.

The main reason for starting this thread was to generate a little interest in these two great players that don't always get to play. However most of the post have happened after the show started. I don't want to take anything away from anyone who played the convention, but one thing I enjoyed in the early years was the more local players being featured like Russ, Wally, and Joan. I also think that Johnny Cox would be a huge asset to the show and he did show some interest in being invited to play. There are many other players that I could list that I would like to see and some we're on the list this year.

Well thanks everyone for the kind words. Maybe I have done or said something to someone that has caused this. But nevertheless I appreciate the times I did get to play at both St. Louis and Dallas. There have been some other shows that have asked me to come play but it is usually much to far for me to travel. Since I still make 100% of my income playing I find it hard to turn down work for several days to attend. I do miss visiting with my old and new friends though.

Hell I wasn't invited and haven't been for 3 years. I did the talent show 3 years. A lot of people enjoyed my playing and I made a lot of friends. I know I'm not the best but I thought these show's were about the instrument, not how great you are.
I will probably be there but only to play six string with a couple pro friends. It's hard for me to support a venue that don't support me.

I don't play the main stage either (except last year when LT Zinn invited me to play on his set), but I can promise you one thing.
I will continue to support this and any steel show that I am able to get to. I don't want to see the demise of ANY steel guitar show. This is what we do.
Most of us never get the opportunity to pick on the road, the Opry or a major steel show. But without our support, we might as well throw in the towel as far as the steel guitar is concerned.
