My tone defeat switch in my LeGrande went-out some time ago and am just now going to order the exact replacement from Emmons. But, thought I would check first, locally at Home Depot, and found this:

Looking at it, it looks to be the same size, terminals are arranged differently, but I will take the original with me, when I go back, to match them-up.

My question is: Is the AMP RATING important?

On the original switch, it has: 125V. 3A (stamped on the case)

This one from Home Depot, is rated at 20 amps. Would the higher amp rating make any difference? Thanks.

No. Even 3 amps is way more than you need.

If you use that switch throw out the screws and solder it instead.

The original is probably a Carling (I'm guessing). You can get one here:

The difference lies in the heavier one has more metal conducting the current/ load.
That switch will work fine as long as you can make it connect.

I'm sorry, but this has been nagging at me. I took a look at the Emmons catalog, and as far as I can tell from the grainy picture that's just a no-name switch in there. Now, that should be enough - because we are talking about a handful of milliwatts and almost no current, and you probably don't sit there playing with the switch all night. This is extremely light-duty work.

But the switch failed. It can only be a mechanical defect.

The Home Depot switch is what we in Germany would politely call 'modest' quality, which means cheap.

You paid what, $3500 for your guitar? Spend $5.00 on a Carling, which has been working for decades without problems as a standby switch in Fender amps, which is much harder duty. Or even better, spend $15.00 on an Apem 600 and the switch will outlive a nuclear holocaust.

Just my opinion.

Steve
