Telonics TCA 500A European Model Combo now in the UK

Post by Mark Dunn »

The RoHS compliant Telonics TCA-500A combo amplifiers arrived in the UK this week.

The first few amps going to players in the UK and Switzerland.

Most players have opted to have the TC Electronic G-Major 2 Effects Processor installed.

The G-Major 2 is supplied programmed with a set of delay/reverb patches developed specifically for steel guitar.

The combination of these two units is stunning!

Thanks Paddy - Yes, the weight makes them ideal for flying with... it's pretty handy when you're lifting them in and out of the car too! And you have plenty of clean volume available. As you say, a bewt :D

Thanks Ruth for answering the question. You're right, yours was in there :)

John - I've just updated the TPA Website - This page shows you all the prices - http://www.tpa-az.com/page5.htm

The TCA-500A Combo with no effects processor fitted is £2000.00 including UK VAT (20%). The combo's are shipped from the US to the UK with no effects processor fitted. For players that require an effects processor we can supply and fit this in the UK before despatching it.

Just for interest - The first batch of combo's built for the US market were fitted with the Lexicon MX-200 effects processors - this unit was originally used successfully with the Telonics Mini Rack system. However, in the last few months we've been developing some Presets for the TC Electronic G-Major 2. This appears to be a good choice for the combo. Most of the European combo's shipped to the players in the last week have had this unit installed. I've been using a G-Major 2 for several months now and with the latest Presets it certainly works very nicely with steel guitar.

I am in possession of my TCA-500 (the one on the far right in the pic above). It really is surprisingly lightweight. I put my TC-Electronics G-Force unit in my amp, as I know my way around it.

I have made Mark aware of a couple of my thoughts that might improve the amp, but..........it is as near perfect as it can be. The EQ section is so comprehensive that it is possible to cover any tonal range that is required. It matches my Webb amp for huge tone, and is a great alternative to the Webb 614E which is no longer produced.

The clarity of the Neo speaker is astounding, and I am informed that for those folks who prefer a 12" speaker to a 15" that the speaker baffle can be removed and replaced quickly and simply. The 15" speaker that came with my amp provides a very detailed and clean sound even at high volume. It has a sweet top end and nice tight bottom end with no pronounced mid range. String separation is incredible.

Some great touches include a power output socket on the front of the amp to power the Telonics volume pedal with a special 10ft lead (supplied). The amp also comes complete with a D2F fitted cover. A mains IEC lead is supplied to run from an output on the rear of the TCA-500 to power the secondary effects unit. One less mains plug to find a socket for. The front panel is illuminated, and this is really useful in dimly lit environments. The controls on the front are colour coded, which is a great idea.

The EQ section includes a parametric mid section, and while I prefer a simplified middle control, the mid cut/boost system is tried and trusted. With the help of my wife turning the controls while I played, I very quickly dialled out any offending mid frequencies to taste.

The output is over 300 watts RMS, plenty of poke for even the loudest of gigs. The amp is very quiet with virtually no hiss or hum even at high volume settings, which makes it ideal to record through.

The Wet/Dry control on the front panel controls the effects send signal. This is a useful addition, along with the blend control, which fine tunes the tone once the basic tone settings are in place.

Bottom line - this is a very impressive lightweight amp that has so many features that I can't even begin to list them all. Telonics guru Dave Beaty and his team have excelled themselves with this beauty, and really are to be commended.
Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Telonics TCA-500, Webb 614-E,
