Heard them at the Chautauqua Institute last night, 7/25/14. Outstanding. Lotsa Bob Wills type stuff, with 3 fiddles. During a Vince Gill tune Paul Franklin
did some fill where one note dropped at least a fifth
and he didn't move his bar position on the neck. He
must have used a pedal to drop so far.

I have never heard this drop before. Any ideas?

I was on fifth street in Las Vegas,Nv. and some one handed me a dollar.So I gave it to Paul and I think he gave haft to Vince.Uncle Leo J Eiffert Jr

Ken, I seem to remember Paul saying he has a change that moves the G# (3rd string) up to a B, and another change that drops it to an E. So using the combination of those two changes he can move a note down a 3 1/2 steps, a fifth.

That sounds like it. He had a grin on his face when he played it, several times during the song. Like he knew he was doing something special.

Ken, you traveled a long way for that show. Isn't Chautauqua in NY?

Yes Ron. It sure is. I have a house in Panama, NY
where I stay in the summer months, being retired and all. It's been mostly rain this year here in NY, so it hasn't been all that pleasant this year.
My house is about 15 minutes from the Chautauqua Institution, tho I can't afford to go there but maybe once a year.

Around October it's back to LA and the rat race there.

Gee, I wonder what gauge string he uses to pull a high G# up to a B without breaking it. I could see it more readily on the 6th string, but on the 3rd?? I'd be ducking every time I used that change!

If I'm not mistaken, it is the 6th string that he has the raise to B, and the lower to E, on.

I heard it was string 6 too. I would really be surprised if a 3rd string could pull that off. But, we are talking about Paul Franklin. He does stuff that the typical mortal couldn't even begin to imagine.
