Topic: Quilter vs. Fender Mustang 3 |

Anyone out there have any experience with both a Quilter Amp (MicroPro or Aviator) and the Fender Mustang 3? Would be used for bluesy lap steel and guitar playing. Primarily at home but want the option to have something to jam with if that occasion should arise.
Other than a difference of roughly $600 in price, is there anything that would sway you one way or the other in making a pick of either amp? Thanks. |

I have not tried those Quilter amps. I was seriously considering a Tone Block. Actually was able to try that one and those sound really good. I would like to try the Quilter Steelaire someday, and also some of Brad Sarno's pre-amps and put together a component system. But until then, I went with the Mustang III and it might be a while before I even bother with anything else. It sounds really good. If you like Fender classic sounds, they are in there. Plus, you can go directly into the soundboard, directly into a computer connection you can play backing tracks through it while playing your instrument to practice or write, Fuse technology for tweaking the sound, well, you probably know all that. Don't let the price fool you. I would have paid lots more for this. Totally happy and it is loud enough to jam with a heavy handed drummer. The technology's come a long way and FMIC is doing something right with the Mustang series. |

Well, I have a link posted here in Electronics, with a recording of a modified Mustang I..... very minimal amp... but still with the Fender FUSE software that Mustangs have for fine tuning/saving-to-the-amp..... and dog gone it... these Mustangs products are good... but mine weighs around 16 lbs., and is only 20 watts...
..but never the less, that Fender Fuse software is really awesome... allowing you to spend days fine tuning a channel/setting..... and then saving it to the on-board amp in your Mustang.. so you can take it to the gig with you..... pretty cool.
Then I also ordered my Steelaire.....
This amps needs nothings.. nothing what-so-ever...
... after one gig I wonder if it needs me?
Seriously.... the Steelaire is something I never had in 40 years.. a 200 watt, 15" speaker, really awesome sounding amp.... that weighs 35 lbs.
I knew if I lived long enough... and kept playing PSG.....

| I realize this doesn't answer the op's question but I have an Aviator and I like it a lot. It's probably more than you need, power wise, for lap steel. It's great for pedal steel. I have the head and usually run it into a Rick Johnson cab with a single D-120. It has beautiful tube-like cleans. I like the simplicity of the control layout. |

Thanks guys for all the advice. Probably pull the trigger in September and until then, keep vacillating.
The Mustang 3 and both Quilters are all great-sounding amps that do "clean" very well. |

I have a Mustang II and really love it. But at the end of the day, it is a cheap Asian built amp. The Quilters are in a whole different league, being US made. If you have the extra money, I'd say get the Quilter. Or hold out for the Milkman hybrid.
