Calvin Vollrath Session.

Post by David Hartley »

I have started recording with Calvin.

This is an exiting session, Buddy Emmons recorded for him not so many years ago.

Check him out, especially the photos too with the Time Jumpers and Vince.

What a fantastic player..

Calvin has been part of the house band at Jeff Bradshaw's Canadian Steel Guitar Show for the past couple of years. Just a wonderful player, and to have him and Redd Volkaert on the show (along with Dave Hamilton - a longtime part of the house band and a monster) was a brilliant move on Jeff's part. Hard to concentrate on what you are playing though, in my experience, when all you want to do is listen to these guys play!

Calvin IS great. How nice you're collaborating with him David.

I didn't know he'd recorded with the Big E. Can you recommend any albums?

What I most treasure about Calvin's music is his excellent repertoire of Metis fiddle tunes.

Thanks for the heads-up, David.

That Vollrath-Spicher Air Mail Special CD is exceptional - terrific C6 playing by Buddy Emmons. A favorite cut for me is the Stuff Smith tune, 'Skip It.'

As a follow up to Bob's comment about Calvin, here's a photo of him playing with Redd Volkaert at Jeff Bradshaw's steel show last June. Also another, with Bob Blair on steel, himself!

Thanks for the kind words. Truly a highlight for me to record with the 2 Buddy's and all the other players on the Air Mail Special session.

I'm a huge fan of the steel guitar thanks to Dr. John Lacey. We picked together back in the 80's and he introduced me to the wonderful world of steel guitar. Thank you John. There should be more fiddle and steel in the world!!!

I've been getting messages asking if the album 'Air Mail Special' is available for download and the answer is yes. If you paste this address,

http://www.calvinvollrath.com/cd-single-mp3-downloads

into your address bar, it will take you to my website and the MP3 store. I have many recordings so you'll have to scroll down some to find the album 'Air Mail Special'.

There's also another album you might be interested in with lots of Buzz Evans steel guitar on it. 'Country Fiddlin'. Redd Volkaert picks the lead guitar on this recording. Those boys can play!!

Mr. David Hartley is one heck of a player, let me tell ya...I'm sure you already know that...

Here's a photo of Buddy and myself in the studio.

Thanks Jeff and David. I'm actually releasing 2 recordings on May 24th of this year. Jeff has recorded some tracks for me as well. Such a wonderful player he is. Next to add his touch to some tunes is Redd Volkaert. I'm sure you can imagine how much fun I'm having mixing the tunes.

Hi

Post by David Hartley »

This is really nice music.
It's some of my best playing in my opinion. Calvin, Redd and others are simply fantastic.

Here's the digital download link (it's the second album down from the top).
It's called 'Vintage Volrath'. http://www.calvinvollrath.com/2014-recordings
At least have a listen to 'Yesterday' if you can.
I am on most of these tracks on this album.

I play on 'The Country Phair' track too on the album called 'The Journey' at the top also.

Best wishes all.
DH

PS. I use the Rains, with a Telonics volume pedal recorded direct into Logic.

Anyone know who played steel on "Pete's Country Classic" by Calvin?

Great song...lucky we up here get to hear it every Sunday morning on Pete's show on CFCW.

It's on his website...also on Spotify.
