Song that makes you cry....
John Prine's Sam Spade (there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes) brings a tear to my eye

You've put on some thought-provoking threads here lately, Tom...
From the same John Prine album: "Hello In There"
"Secret Love" - Lloyd Green
"That's My Job" - Conway
"I Swear" - John Michael Montgomery
That's probably good for a half box of Kleenex.
Added 5/16/14: "You Are My Sunshine."

"That's My Job" is kinda sad, but the one song that really made me sad was "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder in the eighties. I don't know why that song made me sad, but when I was a kid, it always made me cry a little bit. When I hear that song now, I laugh at that memory. I think "I Just Called" would make a great steel instrumental

This is one thing I like about classic country... those songwriters really know how to take a man's low-simmering emotions and boil them over.
"Holding Things Together" - Merle Haggard

"I Did The Right Thing" - Johnny Paycheck

"I've Seen Better Days" - Johnny Paycheck

All of these songs involve a man either abandoning his kids, having his ex-wife take his kids away from him, or having his wife abandon him and leave him alone with his kids.

I heard it first some years back on an Austin City Limits show which featured Chet Atkins. Chet put on this old hat and sang (yes sang) a song about his dad. I cried like a baby and since I'd taped that show I play it from time to time and still cry along with it. Chet has an uncanny resemblance to my late father who I loved very much and still miss today even though he's been gone twenty five years....
Another one I get teary eyed to is the Reba McIntyre recording of "the Greatest Man I Never Knew"....JH in Va.

Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!
The Chet song Jerry mentions is "I Still Can't Say Goodbye".

I could bring a tear to a glass eye.
