Lately my NV 400 has been intermittently cutting out; either down to about 50% or out altogether. This has been going on for about a week (but, miraculously, not at a gig on Thursday night; why I was dumb enough to take an amp in this state to a gig is a separate issue). It seemed that I have heard of this happening before, so I did a search on the forum and found innumerable threads on this. The consensus was that the culprit is either the reverb molex connector or the power amp in and out jacks.
My first step was to try the trick of placing a patch cord between the poweramp jacks. And this is where things got strange. At this point the cut out presented itself in spades, but now it was constant and fluctuating, like a giant slow tremolo. What was that??
Alarmed, I turned off the amp and tried the other various fixes: working the patch cord ends in and out of those poweramp jacks, and doing the same with the molex plug for the reverb. I then put the patch cord back in the poweramp jacks, turned on the amp, and, voila!: it held up like a champ for the rest of the evening.
Anyone have a hunch what that weird "tremolo" was all about? |

I'd say it would have to relate to tarnished connectors... tarnished metal can do some strange things when electricity's involved, dissimilar metals create voltages, and op-amps are very sensitive to bias voltage changes. Glad you got through the gig... clean that sucker real good. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

Dan, Stephen,
Ever since I became interested in radio and electronics, I have always had trouble building oscillators that worked, but I have built many amplifiers that would oscillate without being prompted.
Go figure.

My Nashville 400 did this just last night on gig, sound was distorted, loss of volume, etc.. Gonna send it to peavey to get checked out, I've had this amp for 24yrs. so can't really complain. |

Yes, don't get me wrong: this NV400 is overdue for service and I don't hold it against Peavey or my amp. If I didn't have a few gigs in the upcoming weeks for which I really need this amp, I'd hand it over for a tune up right away. |
