The steel guitar is not dying....in fact today it's getting prime time television coverage!
I think the really BIG problem is how the instrument is currently being marketed.
Who wants to see bearded, unshaven guys with funny hats playing a little understood instrument while leaning so far forward at the waist that all one can see is the very top of the hat.
Now, W.G. Wentworth has the right idea! They've got a scene with a bunch of happy Hawaiian 'bruddahs' dancing and singing with a local group of native islanders on a nicely landscaped white sandy beach surrounded by graceful palm trees and they have this
beautiful island girl playing the steel guitar, making comping and glissing moves with the bar hand.
No goofy hat for her. Just a big happy smile and the steel guitar. How 'bout that?
And some of you were believing that the steel guitar was dying. |

Is this what you're talking about, Ray?

So, if you're asking would I prefer watching a pretty girl with skimpy clothes playing steel guitar over some dude?
Of course I would! No contest!

You're right on! That's the one...........
Looks like she was playing one of those cannabis guitars ( I think?). Her slides were accurate and appropriate to the song they were performing, the volume was not too loud.......and she had a beautiful smile, something steel players seldom display. |

Yeap - that's why I play Hawaiian now ...
I was noticing how FUN & EROTIC every single vintage Hawaiian LP use to be with beautiful girls and scenes of paradise...now what red blooded male in their right mind wants to hang out in a crusty old dive bar and listen to depressed drunken men whose woman is cheating on them....
I'll take the hula girls _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |
