My Grateful Dead act is coming to SF for a handful of shows in June. www.deadonlive.com I'm playing 3 guitars, banjo, mandolin and steel (on 4 songs). Tough to get everything on a plane these days so reaching out on the forum if anyone knows a biz that rents decent steels. Single neck Emmons set up is great. I've been playing steel since 1975 (and still suck) but have lucked out and gotten a decent gig or 2. Just found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQit1D4McIE&list=RDCPPDNsO1brk My steel was in a truck somewhere and Terry Wendt was nice enough to hook me up with this Fessy to borrow. (listening I remember volume pedal holes didn't match my pedal and had to go in the basement of the Opry and cut up little pieces of wood so it fit. Was still slipping all over for the show!) Will rent from biz or individual willing. Thanks again!

Tall toad music in Petaluma often has a steel or two in stock.
Call Charlie they might rent one to you.

To quote the great Yogi Berra, "it's like Deja Vu all over again."

We had a similar thread last year.

Get ahold of Larry Cragg in San Rafael in Marin County. Larry was Neil Young's (and often Ben Keith's) guitar tech for many years but retired from that gig a couple years ago. He has an instrument (and amp) rental business in Marin County, a fairly short drive north of San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge.

He's also the pedal steel player in a country band, Buck Nickels and Loose Change. My friend Ross Perry is the bass player.

Larry's company is Vintage Instrument Rental, here is a link to the page listing three pedal steels for rent, an S-10 Emmons, and a pair of D-10 Sho-Buds.

Thanks Mark. Larry seems a great guy and a good contact. Steel and banjo at a very reasonable price. Great gear too. Appreciated.

You're welcome. Glad that's going to work out for you!

I try to send Larry business whenever I can because he obviously does know his stuff.

When all else fails the concept of hitting up a regional music store if they have something in stock like a used pedal steel for a rental is certainly an option, but an older used steel that might be for sale on the floor, and for the traveling musician - you don't have time to dink around with it if it's not in plug-and-play condition - sounds like a possible recipe for a nightmare.
