I dug up some old records I had recorded at age 14 and while some were really advanced for my young age, they really make me cringe. That's life, I guess.
We are always our worst critics. I listen to recordings, that I have played on, and wondered how did do that.

I agree that it's better to be starting PSG in the Information Age because there is SO MUCH MORE TEACHING MATERIAL available, quite a bit of it is FREE ! No more secret squirrel copedants and the only real mysteries is what string voicing a Lloyd Green uses (lol) ....
On a related note, I went to the OSGA jam today and got to suck in front of Sonny Curtis....haha. I like playing jams because it forces me to improvise,which is a weak point in my playing. It stoked my fire so to speak. My MSA classic ( the boat anchor) sounded good. I need to be able to give that horn some justice. 😃

Something that might help. Pick out ten known steelers playing the same song. Notice that none do it the same way. That should tell you more about the instrument and what you will find to be true. It should help stop some of the frustration you will run into..
