My '81 Super Pro is missing a pair - one RH and one LH - of Sperzel tuners, and the folks at Sperzel tell me they cannot replace them. The shaft for these tuners is significantly shorter than others I have found, and I am told that this style has not been made for over twenty years.

No doubt someone else here on the forum has faced a similar problem, so what to do?

Dave,

You are correct. I spoke to Roger at Sperzel, and they don't make the short barrel tuners anymore, and haven't in years. I have been trying to find some, and he advised me to soak the ones on my Emmons SKH in some solvent to dissolve the hardened grease that binds them up. They don't come apart all the way if you try to take them apart (a heads up). After you soak them for a few days, lube them with some good synthetic oil, if you have to go that route. Just some info. Good luck.

Roy

Thanks Roy, the ones I have were soaked in 409 for a couple of days and that gave most of them new life, a few have yet to be loosened up, but it's the one missing one and one broken one that present the challenge at the moment...

Larry did his best but no joy. He did mention that a forum member bought a bunch of them from him recently, but could not remember who it was.

So, I'm back on the forum again in search of a handful of short-shaft Sperzel tuners, at least two for each side, more if they are available and in good shape.

If you've any ideas at all please email me...

I will endeavor to do so, Jim, but it will require removing one from the guitar to do so. They are the "standard" ShoBud tuners of the post-Gumby headstock era. The shaft is shorter than most other tuners, there is a single, small alignment pin and there is no barrel sleeve on the attaching nut.

If necessary I will drill out the headstock to accept another model but the short shaft is important in order for the strings to line up properly with the nut.

Thanks Larry, the ones on the left in the photo match the appearance of the old ones, as for "wide or narrow", if there are differences in width of the casting itself, I can't say, other than it has a mid-1981 serial number. I "need" ten or so, would happily take twenty.

Dave FYI I got these direct from Sperzal for $4.25 each. In 2009... They are the same short shaft but the key is smaller...Larry Smile
