Whether you play out, live, or studio,...You really owe it to yourself to check out Creation Audio Labs, "Redeemer"
I just went over and picked one up, for an upcoming live show, (my first in several years...)...as these guys are a convenient, local company. I spoke with Dan Galysh about it, beforehand, and found out that he had one in his personal stash, and, that he hadn't even tried out yet...We got to talking about it, and he said he was gonna take it out to try over the weekend. I plugged mine in last night, through my Pod XT, and 'phones',- and, I could not believe the difference. To make a long story short,..I got a phone call from Dan, this morning, and he was absolutely raving about the thing!! He said that he could not believe that he waited so long to give it a 'whirl'. - and bemoaned what he'd been missing the whole time since...
This thing is not an effect device. It's more like a Goodrich Matchbox - but 10 x better. The note separation is incredible, and my knuckle harmonics sound like crystal bells.

Watch this vid - They soldered ends on, and made up a 'guitar' cord out of a 20 year old, 100 foot extension cord (non-shielded), and matched it up with -both- a genuine high grade, - and low grade guitar cable. See if you can hear the difference. I barely can.

Here's where to get it:

*I don't work for, or promote for pay - for these guys,...I'm simply passing on some great news.

Your pal, DH

Does this do the same as a lil izzy? I've never used a goodrich buffer. Does it do essentially the same thing?

...Nope, It's much, much, better.

The differences between your 'Pick-up' - Whatever it is - and your V.P., are a whole lot more than you realize they are. They are fighting against you, and robbing your tone. With this clever little device, you can get your tone back - The way you want it it to be ...

There appears to be at least one area where the Izzy will have it beat... no cable between the Izzy and the guitar. The cable itself could load the pickup.

While I understand and appreciate your enthusiasm, I do feel it should be mentioned that any decent preamp/buffer unit would probably do the same thing. (And, I think most of the electronic gurus on the forum would likely agree.) Mr. Green

Donny,
I'll be the first to agree with you. When they're used properly, the Freeloader is excellent, as is the Matchbox. There wouldn't be so many out there if they didn't work.

That 100 ft extension cord demonstration can backfire. Years ago, I used a hundred feet of lamp cord in essentially the same comparison test. It always worked, and helped sell a lot of Li'l Izzys. . . until one day when I tried it in a small music store in Richmond VA. How was I supposed to know that I was only a block away from a 50,000 watt AM station's transmitter? From then on, I left the lamp cord at home.

One of those lessons you don't forget!

Best regards,
Craig Baker 706-485-8792

The Li'l Izzy is, without a doubt, the best unit I ever got hooked up with, and I have had a bunch. I won't be without one. Jack

you've got to admit the li'l izzy is a cuter name and a much cuter and smaller, more convenient unit. i don't think anything else is necessary.

......always make sure you have some suitable ferrite beads handy when using one. Very Happy

As has been said already: any properly used matching unit is good. I am sure you all get good to excellent results playing through your matching units, compared to playing without one. I sure do, and the difference between them is not in how well they match but in what else they do that affects the signal.

Back in the days when I designed and produces matching units for professional use, the limit for how how long a cable an analog signal could be sent over without having to compensate and compromise because the loss became audible, was about 3 kilometers (approx. 10000 feet).

The longest cable/line I managed to "tame" well enough for analog signals to fool people's ears (not mine), was a 12 kilometers (approx. 40000 feet) twisted pair phone line. The owners of that line - the nation-wide phone company - said it could not be done, so they just laughed, removed all filters, and gave me free access to both ends of the line and expected the project (done for a small local radio station) to fail. They didn't laugh once the station went on air through that long line.

Good post Georg.

Sounds like you've been down the road a few more miles than most people. Wish you had been there in 1980 to remind me.

Hoooahh there,..Fellas,..rein it in. I didn't post this up to 'out-do', or trash the "Lil Izzy", or Craig, himself. I am not even remotely familiar with the "Izzy" in the least, so I have absolutely nothing to say, about it - either way -.
This is just a simple review of a terrific product from C.A.L.
And, besides that Scott, you're wrong there, (..again). It doesn't have it beat at all. There remains this option.....Which is absolutely, UN-deniably,..... >DIRECT< http://www.creationaudiolabs.com/redeemer-inline/

And yet,..another option, still, - For those who play a lap-steel, or any other instrument, in the rotation of a set-list... http://www.creationaudiolabs.com/redeemer-beltpack/

I believe Dale was referring to the Goodrich units. At least, that was my take.

*Side note...
I just received a very pleasant phone call from Craig Baker. He is an extremely nice fella, and a genuinely intelligent, superb, human being...
The truth is,..if I had tried his "Lil' Izzy", first - I'm certain that I would have been equally amazed with the result...

No hard feelings on my end, Craig... And, I do, truly, apologize for my inherent streak of sarcasm...

dale..quit apologizing for your attitude. everytime i see it i feel it's well deserved! i know you're too nice to want to piss anyone off but some people ask for it.
i thought your description of the redeemer was engaging, to the point of making me curious about it. (i like the military look) and i know that your input here is always for the good of the forum in a helpful way.
many of us got hooked on craig's izzy many, many years ago so it's an old friend that's happily resurfaced again.
i would imagine they're all good tools.

Thanks, Chris Ivey. (..I just wanted you to see, for yourself, how you name would look,..using capital letters..Rolling Eyes )
And, I agree. Any tool that does the job,..is a good tool.

*BTW, the unit, as pictured above, does appear to be a (military) olive green...The one that I have is solid black, > and, about the size of a pack of un-filtered Camels...

( Naturally,..I had to fabricate a holder for it, too...)

I only use an impedance matching preamp (mine is a Sarno Freeloader) when I can't get the tone I want any other way. More often, the sound of my guitar through a pot pedal is just fine. I use low capacitance wires that are no longer than necessary.

Maybe my ears are shot. Oh Well

B0b, thanks for dropping by. I haven't used anything (buffer-wise) for several years either...
I just got a new amp. I was referred to the C. A. Labs guys, by the amp builder, himself, because I wasn't getting the clarity, and crispness that I was after.

...I'd better get back to the grind, - And, my newly 'exposed' agenda of enticing unsuspecting 'Noobs' into emptying their bank accounts on useless crap that they don't need, or want...

Looks like they have an "in guitar" version that eliminates the outboard box, and connects directly to the output jack. Hmmmmm. a little R&R tape for the battery...

I think I'll chime in here. Y'all be nice to Dale, now. One of the creeds that he lives by is genuinely trying to help other steel players and besides that, he's a good fella if you really get to know him. Smile
I have tried out a borrowed, belt pack Redeemer for a few gigs now. The result I'm finding is a VERY pristine sound. I play through a Little Walter Twin rig and I'm still on the fence on whether I like the old sound or this "new", very clean sound with the Redeemer circuit. It's a little crispy in the very high frequencies. I will say this- I play through in-ear monitors and it's one of the best sounds that I've heard through this application. The experimentation continues….
