I'm not exactly certain why I keep putting these You Tube videos out there. It seems some people don't really understand the purpose of it and they just want to be critical of something. Like if they offer some sort of criticism it obviously means they know what they are talking about!
With the above said, please know that I don't mind anyone offering some sort of insight but my gracious can we please keep it positive. For those of you who have met me and know me, you know I'm about one of the most encouraging people of others work that you will ever know. I find the positives in anyone's attempts to play, be an artist, learn, experiment and generally just make joyful noise! So there that is off my mind now!
I offer this to ya'll today. Keep in mind that my whole life I have not been a traditional E9 player. While I have listened to other steel players and their work I have never copied anyone. Thus, you may hear influences in my playing of others but mostly you will hear me! That's my goal. Always has been and always will be. So I'm okay if you think this doesn't fit the norm. Likely if you think it is different it is because it was intended to be that way.

As always, super good Zane. Love to you hear you play this style.
My wife said (he sure has some really great licks) and I just said,

Zane,
Really like your style. Always something unexpected throughout a song but really tasteful.
Must be that "have not been a traditional E9 player" thing.
Keep 'um comin'.

Well, some people believe that I work for Zane, but no, I do not and have never even met the man, but I have followed his music and I say music, for sometime now. Zane is an accomplished musician on anything with strings or keyboard and has the uncanny ability to learn an instrument almost instantly. The guy has been playing as a pro for over 30 years now, it is not a newbie or Johnny Come Lately. He is a composer, singer, songwriter, producer, owns and operates multiple music companies in Nashville, along with the beautiful and most talented wife of his, Donna King, who also runs her own gospel music production company.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, before you get to negative with Zane King, you really need to know who and what you are really dealing with.
I hope he continues on with the path he is taken, giving us a look at all kinds of music that can be made with a steel, if you also have the talent to do so.
Keep on doing your thing Zane, there are those of us who like and simply admire what you do! |

Hi Zane, we have admired your playing since my wife and I saw you in St. Louis. I believe you were sixteen and blew us away with your speed picking and great spirit. We hope to see you in person again sometime. James |

Thanks for kind words! Wally I appreciate you saying those things and I love that you know all of that about my music career.
Originality is not an easy thing to attain. The steel guitar affords the musician a lot of opportunity to have individual expression. That much is definitely a known fact. I just tend to take everything a step further and I attempt to push the boundaries. This can get one into trouble if they don't know what they are doing. I don't understand people that if you are to play a song like "Rose Colored Glasses"....does that mean I have to sit in front of written notes and play it without expression or mimic what has been done with the original tune. If that is the case, then I have played my last song because I will NOT do that. Talk about boring. I liken all of this kind of discussion to what I see in Contemporary Christian Music. Take a song like Amazing Grace for instance. Recently, an artist did a version of this an added a "chorus". As you know Amazing Grace is all verses. I think it was absolutely brilliant. Yet others might think that is was blasphemous to change such a sacred hymn. Then look at my version on You Tube of this (which is by far my most received video ever)....and I play it in 3 different keys! Oops....it wasn't written in 3 keys now was it.
Sorry for the rant.

I have never heard anything that wasn't 1st class from you on your YouTube videos. I really do like your originality. I saw those couple of remarks a couple of people made on the youTube remarks. I think they must be crazy or something. I guess it is easy for some people to be rude because they know they would never be in a position to be compared to you. I know one thing, you would kick they butt. GREAT playing as always.

I love Pass Me By, and you did a fantastic job on it. I've tried to play steel like what's on records, but always end up sounding like myself. The great piano player, Bruce Hornsby, always tells his audience, "if you want to hear my songs played like the record, go buy the album". Then he proceeds to knock your hat in the creek, and blow you away with his talent. Play what you feel Zane, and keep on pickin'. |

Beautifully done! Can,t understand why anyone would not enjoy this fine rendition. Then, some would gripe about anything. Jack _________________ Zum D10 8x5,rev pre-amp, TC M300, Split 12, n-112, IZZY, Hilton vp, Geo L, BJS Hughey, Live Steel |

The only gripe I have about his fantastic playing is,
I'm just too darn old to figure how he plays them licks. _________________ aka "Lucky Kay"--Custom built Rittenberry SD10 3X5, Walker S/S, NV-112, and Hilton Pedal |

Zane,
The only type of person that would give negative feedback on your youtube video of Pass Me By are the ones that are either jealous of your talents (I know I am but I'm not bitter ) or know nothing about music/steel guitar in general. To know an instrument as you do takes years of practice and a lot of passion. I thoroughly enjoyed your take on this old classic and only wish I knew my steel neck about 1/32 of how well you know yours. If I did, I'd be a pretty good steel player
Fabulous sir, as always!
Cheers,
Andy |

THANK YOU!! for all of the positive comments! I appreciate all of you. Even differing opinions and folks offering sound constructive criticism is welcomed as long as it is done tastefully. I will say that not much of the ugly critical comments has happened here on the SGF. Most of what got me going here was a comment on a Facebook post. That said, I think many of you equally follow FB and SGF, so my comments are likely noticed by one and all. I forget now who it was but their response to my "Z Bluezy" video was just downright out of place. Additionally, I had a couple of people post on my You Tube regarding my interpretation of "Pass Me By". I can tell you right now that I'm not a purist but I think you would find it difficult to find any player who respects the entire breadth of what the steel guitar can do and the fact that I honor all of those who have gone before me. To be completely candid, I think I represent the instrument fairly well. I have spent the bulk of my career in Gospel music and just in those areas alone I have accomplished a good bit with keeping steel guitar "in the mix" throughout that genre.
So yes, I agree with some of the above comments. Next time, someone wants to offer ugly criticism they need to first consider my entire resume. I'm not a complete authority but I have made a good living in the music business since I was just a teenager. And Praise Be To God it looks like I will make a living in music for a long time to come.
Respectfully,
