Question about tone and pickup adjustment

On one of my home made steels I have Vintage Vibe CC pickup. For the most part I like the tone I am getting but would like it to be a little more open or airy, if that make sense. Does anyone have any thoughts on what effect varying the distance from the strings to the pickup will have on tone and over all sound quality. From what I have experienced placing the pickup closer to the strings increases the treble response but it also makes the guitar sound harsh. I am looking for a slightly more delicate sound. It may be that the pickup is just too hot and I should back it way off and adjust my amp setting - any suggestions?

Well, I just answered my own question - the pickup was adjusted way too close to the strings. After lowering the pickup as far as it would go, and gradually bringing it closer to the strings I found the sound I was looking for. As it turns out the distance from the strings ended up being much greater than I expected, so starting from an extreme, " too low" position really helped. As a side note, the amp controls seem to be a little more sensitive or active. This will take a live performance with the full band to truly test out but I am encouraged.
