Ralph Mooney and Roy Nichols

Post by Elisha Wiesner »

Hey Guys,

I've been a long time lurker on the forum and you guys really have something special going on here. I play mostly spanish style guitar although I own and play a 50's Carvin 6 string lap steel. I'm in no way a master at it but I have fun and it's a great break from my regular guitar playing. At some point in my life I hope to tackle the pedal steel.

Anyhow, I am posting because I am doing some research and am looking for a photograph of Roy Nichols playing his Mosrite double neck guitar. He would have been playing it around 1959-1960 when he was backing Wynn Stewart. Ralph Mooney was the steel player in the band then and I though it was possible that one of you guys had a picture of the band or knew where I could find one. There are several online, but none of them show Roy's guitar. I'm sure a photo exists, I just haven't been able to find it. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Elisha

Hey guys, Thanks. Those are the two that I have so far, Both just show the necks of the Mosrite Double neck but I am trying to track down a pic that shows the body as well.

I am just looking for photos. Deke doesn't have any of the Roy Nichols Doubleneck. I know there's got to be one out there somewhere. I'm sure plenty of folks took pictures of Wynn Stewart and his band playing at the Nashville Nevada club as well as on tour. I posted here thinking someone might have a picture of Ralph Mooney where Roy and his guitar were visible.

I have no idea if that story is actually true or not but yes, that's the one. You can see the necks in both of the pictures posted earlier in the thread.

The bus stop double Mosrite, refinished and sold through a SF music store.

The owner should know about this thread by tomorrow and may contact you.

Thanks Chris. If you mean the current owner, I know him quite well. Neither he or I have a picture of the guitar in it's original state. If it's an old owner, hopefully they have an old picture of it.

That bandstand picture would most likely from 1960. Possibly '61.

The timeline suggested here might be a bit off, I assume someone told you Roy had the doubleneck in 1959-1960, but these pics are from the Nashville Nevada Club, which opened in late 1961, and Merle Haggard didn't join that group until April of 1962.

Sure, I'm almost a decade late to post this, but I only found this conversation in a search today.

There's various pics of Roy on this page, including one of him playing the doubleneck at the Foothill Club.
