Well, I have to hang in here with the old obscure tuning nobody uses ...............any more, A Major.

E C# A E C# A (Hi to Lo) which is the Hi Bass version.

I also use the Lo Bass tuning at home for students:

E C# A E A E

When I was playing on stage (at 76 now, I've backed off a lot of it), I used two same guitars in two different tunings, A6 and E or E7th. I used two Fender Champs and in recent years two Eastman Airlines. Playing two identical guitars saved any adjustment to the PA when I changed from one guitar to the other.

I've always been using G6 on my 7 string reso (low to high - GBDEGBD), and recently put the top six of those on a 6 string lap (BDEGBD). Makes for an easy change to E7 (G to G# - high D to E).

GBDGBD on my Dobro
EAEAC#E on my Tricone
Usually C6 on my National lap

All major and minor chords including 7ths of a key are found in order in the space of 3 frets with no slants. Only partial chord is the diminished.

I have settled on a 10 string tuning, basically an extended C13: C Bb C E G A C E G (b)

On my everyday 8 string resonator guitar, all low to high:

G13: F G B D E G B D (main tuning)

A11: F G B C# E G B D (don't use the F much)

G13/E7: F G# B D E G B D (lots of 7ths here)

By only changing one string a half step, I don't keep the band waiting. Also, I don't have to re-tune other strings due to change in the down pressure on the spider.

To fool around with C6 stuff at home, I usually have another resonator guitar tuned to some version of

Bb6: F G Bb D F G Bb D

This can get tweaked to the Bb equivalents of several C6 variations.

All tunings use the same string gauges, very similar to the Beard G6 8 string resonator set.

I always return to G or D (or A or E), 6 string. Every once in a while I'll retune the third string to go to a 6th tuning, but usually when accompanying someone else where I'll need minor chords.

Have any of you seriously tackled the C-Diatonic Tuning used by Jerry Byrd?

One of our recently deceased SGF Members did so and performed some really beautiful numbers with it.

Jerry seemed really to like it. He seemed to feel it was a great tuning for single string work.

What's your position on that tuning?

Having a lot of different tunings is fine if they can all be mastered. Getting the first tuning down pat before jumping into others seems to keep from being a jack of all tunings & master of none....

Trying a new one on my Ric B6 - using a C6 string set (SIT)

Modified Feet Rogers D tuning - (low to high) C D F# A D F#

Feet used a low D from what Jeff Ah Hoy said in a previous post. I like the C on the bottom for a dominant 7th chord. Great for the not-so-jazzy Hawaiian stuff.

Tuning the A up to a B and you have a D13 chord (sans fifth) that gives me that Sol Hoopi/Dick McIntire old jazzy sound that works well for hapa haole tunes.
