For those that do not know the purpose of link exchanges.

Years ago Google, now also Yahoo and MSN, developed a system of ranking websites based on how they were connected(linked) to other sites.

The basic idea is, the more links you have pointing to your website, the higher you will rank in Google's Organic listings for specific keyword searches. In general, a link is a vote of confidence from the other websites, the more votes you have the higher you are ranked. Over the years this concept has evolved, but if you have a music related site, it is better to have links from other music related sites than lets say a site that sells underwear. There is an industry that has developed around this concept called Search Engine Optimization or SEO.

This is for the Free(organic) listings, not to be confused with the paid listings that are also shown when you do a Google search.
